These are the best AAA size batteries I've ever used:
Sanyo 1000mah AAA 2-pack NiMH Batteries
4-packs are available at other stores.
Sanyo Eneloops are nice but are designed for long shelf life. Unless you plan to let your batteries sit around unused for long periods of time, there is really not much point in choosing Eneloops over Sanyo's higher current capacity NiMH batteries.
Fully charged, mine measure 1.45V. They last a looong time in all the lasers I've used them in- DIY and otherwise (>400mW 445nm, >400mW 405nm, 350mW 650nm, 175mW 532nm, and lower power 532nm).
