$8 Ebay pointer becomes a burning laser!

OK, Kage, you inspired me to complete this mod on one of my 405nm pens from the same seller.

First, I did not disassemble the unit. I removed the aperture cap using soft jaw pliers; it was held in with a minimal dab of glue. Next I measured the depth from the aperture to the module (not the lens) and lopped of most of that with a dremel and a 420 cutting wheel. I was then able to remove the lens with damaging it and put some protection on the diode while I used the same cutting wheel ( the inside part this time ) to finish the job and smooth everything out. After putting a slight bevel on the the end with a dremel grinding stone the front was finished. Next I cut off the excess on the aperture end and pressed the Aixiz focusing ring into it and installed an Aixiz acrylic lens due to the larger diode side input hole.

The battery compartment has a cap which i was able to push out using a socket extension and a wad of paper towel to cushion the metal. I then cut off the appropriate amount of metal (approx 43mm) from the rear and then smoothed it and beveled it. Next I pressed the end cap into the new hole and the job is complete. Now we have a focusable compact 405nm laser using the 10440 battery with a 3.5" footprint.

Here is a picture of the finished product next to the original for reference:

Thanks for looking.. and Thanks, Kane, for the great idea!!!

Very compact build!

I wonder if this could be pushed to a bit more power :)

i just started doing this to the one i bought...

where did you find the lens? i've been looking everywhere but can't find one... (purchasing one)

(i am also very new when it comes to these sorts of things... just starting to dabble into modding the ones i've got.)

Hello, I used the acrylic lens from a Aixiz module, the glass one would also work; the threads are identical. I also used the Aixiz focusing ring. Also, if you don't damage the lens you can probably clean off the thread lock.. I had success with doing this.

You can find these at his website:

or on his Ebay Store:

hmm, thanks, now all i have to do is get the thing apart...

I;ve tried a few things, but haven't been able to do it yet, must be glued in place. thinking about heating it a little and then trying to force it out.

i was able to pot mod mine by removing the foam and using a screw driver to slowly turn it...

the lens i used to make it burn things (while just barely) was the lens out of a green ebay laser.

in my case i wasn't interested in pot modding because this thing has to be 45-55mw.. actually all of the 5 i've got are in that power range. So basically, I didn't "take it apart" I used a caliper to measure where to cut without cutting or gouging the module.. then smoothed that out. The lens is a $.50 acrylic piece from Aixiz ( Let me google that for you ). You can also find the focusing ring via Aixiz (same price i think).

other than that.. i popped out the rear cap. cut 43mm off the back. smoothed it out nice and round and put the rear cap back on. Done.

I wouldn't take it apart and pot mod unless you think it's really abnormally weak.

well, in my exploits my board... well the soldering seems to have broken lose lol i had to wedge a peice of plastic in it to hold it in place for it to work... i'm ordering another one to replace and try to mod it without messing it up.

and i found the axis website just fine... but i can't seem to locate the focusing lens... not sure why though

Here is the lens that I used:

AixiZ

and here is the focusing ring:

AixiZ

This is a link to the full module.. which is nice to have if you want to mess around with some naked diodes:

AixiZ

You can also find that module through various resellers in different/smaller quantities if you want.

good luck! :D

Finally got my aixiz module from hightechdealz today and now I dont have to use my fingernails to adjust the lens!

Alright, all I did was cut down the host to the lens with a pipecutter about a month or two ago and install aixiz lens.

Cellphone makes it look cartoonish. Also the random purple squiggle and red mark in every image is from hitting the camera with a stray beam.

Focused down I can get a red match to light in 2-4 secs.

I got the 10440 cells finally. I'm now officially lasing in shorty mode.

This is by far my favorite laser. :o

Ok I bought one just like the one shown in the pictures and another one from a diffrent seller that has a screw on front kaleidoscope adjustment. Is there a screw on adjustment lens that will just thread on so I dont have to take it all apart?

Both of mine are very bright as stated above.

As far as I know there isnt, the way you make it focusable is exactly the same as with the others. Yank the cap off, cut the laser down (a small pipecutter works freaking great for this) and now you can spin the lens for focus.

I got the cap removed and have cut the host down flush with the lens. It looks to be brass and has a slot across the face. It can not be turned with a screw driver. Am I not turning hard enough? How can I turn it to focus to a fine point? I just bought two of them and have not got a nimh yet but want to get it focused.
