7W Laser from Sanwu Lasers

Hello,
So I was reading up on the 7W laser from Sanwu Lasers and I would love to have a laser with such power; however, I'm still rather new to the whole laser hobby and I'm probably more on the irresponsible side (I'm not pointing lasers in the sky or anything). Should I purchase a laser of this strength? If yes, is it best to buy it through Sanwu Lasers or could a trusted member here create one of similar specifications for a cheaper price?

No.

Start with something much power in power.

What lasers do you currently own? What safety glasses do you have/will you buy?
 
You might want to try something a little lower in power if you've never owned a high power laser before. If you really feel the need for a 7W laser buy goggles before you order one.....and use them religiously!

At that power all it takes is a brief reflection to change your life forever. My first 1 watt blue laser taught me a lot about respecting these toys we all love to play with. The first was about reflections. A reflection from a paperback book with a 'shiny' cover flash blinded me for a few very scary minutes once. If it had been a 7 watt laser, well, it might have been for considerably longer than minutes. More like the rest of my life.
 
I originally bought a 1.2mw 445nm laser that came with goggles. I've just been using those goggles although I would willingly buy a better pair. Would a "brief reflection of light" still blind me with goggles?
 
The cheap plastic goggles you get when you buy a laser are almost always insufficient to protect you from high power laser strikes. The one thing you have going for you with a 7 watt laser is the beam divergence is terrible and one axis diverges very fast making it less likely to blind you with a reflection at greater distances. But, to cut steel springs with it you must use it close to the spring which is very dangerous. Get an OD5+ pair of goggles for a laser like this.

You probably meant to say you bought a 1.2 watt 445nm laser.

I you are going to buy a lacerate that power yes please get a good pair of glasses. Look into Survival lasers glasses they are really great ones. Be safe ..

7 watts? That's a whole lot of power there. 310.00? I think Sanwu's asking 350.00 for the 7 watt-er. But either way as suggested please up grade your glasses. You most definitely going to need them. Yes Sanwu's builds are top notch. You can't go wrong there.

i would suggest as you said you are still new to the hobby to get a less power still same color laser,a 2watt would be still powerfull with very good divergence compered to higher powers and at least you will not be burning random stuff in your house instantly by accident(it happens to me also,my room door has some marks by accident)

From your posts I can see that you should
probably not get a 7watt Laser due to the
fact that you would probably hurt yourself
or someone else or perhaps even burn down
some random structure...:eek:

I would highly doubt that you would need
Googles for a 1.2mW Laser nor would they
be rated to protect your eyes from a 7Watt
Laser....:thinking:

I purchased a 5W laser from Sanwu - Spiker. It was my first laser, and I was a newbie to lasers. I purchased 2 goggles with it as well. I've wear the goggles religiously while using it, and make anyone with me while I'm using it wear the other pair. I've never blinded myself, injured my eyes or anyone else's, or burned anything I didn't intend to burn. It's really not that difficult to educate yourself and learn to be responsible with a high-powered laser, even if you never owned one before.
 
Are there goggles that can protect you from a direct accidental shot in the eyes? I don't anticipate that happening but I want to be as safe as possible. Also, if it were shined at a white piece of paper (which is not technically reflective but it's white), would that injure your eyes as if it were reflected at you? I know that's a weird question

That's mostly the whole point of having laser safety glasses... Take a look at the Eagle Pair from Survival Lasers.

Sure, it could, if you're close enough. If it doesn't set the paper on fire first...
