780nm from CD Player & night vision

Hey,

I removed what i think is a 780nm 5.6mm diode from a old car CD player:

Mounted it in this little heat sink.

Im using Yukon Night vision equipment to view it. (used the 4x Monocular with camera mount to record video)

What it in action Here
I though the divergence would be pretty bad but when i focused it with an acrylic lens it was pretty tight beam.


Now the connections i used are as the following diagram i made:

Would the LD+ and Case pin be connected to each other?

As seen on the video, its running at 2.2V with 110mA, whats a typical max safe current for a CD player diode?

Tell me what you think?

Nice night vision video of your Laser's beam...
I think the LD wavelength from that Drive is probably 780nm..

If there is no positive voltage on your heat sink going back
to the LD case then I don't see a problem connecting the
case to negative if the case is electrically floating...

Maybe other members who have actually used these LDs
could chime in...

Yea CD players/burners would be 780nm. 110mA sounds like a bit much for a player diode. I would back off quite a bit.
Try different lower currents & you can locate the lasing threshold.
Nice video, only video of 780nm by true Night vision I've seen.

Ahh ok, i cant see the 780nm beam, but can see the dot a little bit as a darkish red on some objects.

Good idea i found the threshold when i was slowly ramping up and down the current on my Power supply, haven't recorded it yet tho.
I figured that it wouldn't support mush current because the 'heatsink' it was sitting in was plastic :p

I had 2 other car audio CD players that i had removed from mates cars when doing new installations, these CD players where a lot newer than the one i removed the 780nm diode from.

I pulled apart this JVC player and couldn't find anything that resembled a diode.
When i looked closer and looked the on the opposite way the mirrors where facing i found what looks like a new version of a diode with about 10 pins coming off it, Have a look:

Update!

I used the Aixiz module as my LD- which means its case negative.

So i put it in a Guidesman host with a flexdrive V5 running at 63mA (thats the smallest output of the flexdrive)

She runs, its daytime here and i can see the dot, will wait for darkness to take a video.

Did a video (pretty crap quality), its not very powerful at 63mA but it works!

Rhd has some 9mm IR diodes pressed in Aixis clone modules that are more powerful then 1w for sale...

Gunna get some higher power diodes and some safety glasses :p and see how we go.

If you want invisible to eyesight 980nm or perhaps 850nm will likely do it.

This is a neat idea, but before you spend more time on it, you should get a CD-RW drive so you have an IR diode meant for burning to CDs. Otherwise, you'll be using some really lame and weak CD-player laser. To add insult to injury, car CD-players are meant only for playing audio CDs, which means only 1x read speed, or maybe slightly more if it was higher end and had some data buffering.

Im not sure im thinking Gen 1 ~ 2, it looks pretty crappy because im filming through the eye piece with a camera that's not very good for this type of thing.
Tho when you look through with your own eyes it is pretty clear!

Yeah, thats the plan, ive been playing with the Low power ones atm cause i dont have IR Safety glasses and these where readily avaiblabe (stashed away under my bed :) )

Gunna purchase some 300mW & 500mW versions from china soon, Also sizing up some glasses too.
