I want to make a 5mw violet pointer out a of  PHR-803T diode using this driver http://rkcstr.nfshost.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=65&products_id=180 but I dont know what ma to give it and what housing I can use?

Also im just gonna put it into a aixiz module.

what would I run cycle be too?

can it be  on for like 10 minutes because its capaple of such high power but driven so low?

edit im using a 9 volt battery

just set it to 90-100 mA
it should produce about 60-100 mw
depending on your optics and the specific diode

~31mA = 5mW
~37mA = 10mW

You shouldn't have to worry about duty cycles with this. Leave it on until it drains the battery ;)

Peace,

I trust your judgment on the current needed to be pumped into the diode. However I think he was referring to battery life when he said he would keep it on for 10 minutes. I would also like to know the answer as I have only worked with PHRs on 100 mA+.

what I mean is how long can it be on before it overheats.

not battery life :D

That's very nice, but not very helpful to someone wanting to build a 5mW pointer.

Hey Dave.....

I have a banana and and an apple.......... does that help....  :P
They are very small..... :P

Can I ask why you want it at 5mW?

I'd say go at around 40mW with the PHR even for lecture pointing, (*waits Dave's confirmation) because the violet dot is pretty hard to see as is, so it would be comparable to around 5mW red at that power in brightness, 5mW would be very hard to see at 30'.

Buy a preset driver from rckstr set at ~75mA, and you should still be able to leave it on virtually forever.

I wouldn't look at it from closer than 10' with that power...

And it WILL flouresence on a white projection screen. It would be much brighter than a 5mW red flouresencing.

Why don't you make it from a PS3 (kes-401) diode? they're cheaper, and it would be a waste to get a PHR and not use it for burning. :'(

No.  I keep most of my violet lecture pointers between 5-10mW.  They are plenty visible on a screen and they do not mess with the audience's dark adapted vision.  40mW in a classroom environment leaves the chance of spurious specular reflection much too high for my comfort.

**IF** the pointer is going to be used in a large lecture hall, from the back, I will turn it up, but I warn the buyer more strongly about laser safety.

Peace,
dave

PS3's are NOT less expensive than PHR's right now. IMNHO not driving the PHR to its limits is NOT a waste. It is a long lasting diode ;)

I use the SF-AD112 in my pointers right now, because I have them and they work well at these lower outputs, but I would not hesitate to use a PHR if I didn't have any 112's around.

dave

At 31-37 mA, I'm pretty sure a 9 volt battery is gonna last 10 minutes and beyond. ::)

Good luck shoving one of those into a leadlight...

BTW I can sell you a PS3 diode if you want it. How's $10 shipped sound?
