$55 515nm 30mW Osram

I notice more of a blue tint in media of 510-520 than I do with my eye. The one exception was with a 514nm diode I got to play with. I was very sad to let it go, as it was for someone in a custom build, but it was beautiful.

So, all in favor for a GB on these diodes, say ay, and I'll have this thread moved to the GB sub-forum.
 





Just to note, there are at least 5 easily buyable diodes (I suspect there are others):
PL520 (50mW, 520nm)
this one - PL515 (30mW, 515nm)
PLP520-B1 (120mW, 520nm)
PLP520-B2 (90mW, 520nm)
NDG7475 (1W, 520nm)

There have been at least 3 of these metered between 515nm and 510nm AFAIK.

I'd be interested if (and only if) I can get one <= 512nm. I already have a 520nm one and don't need another near it.

Maybe we can work out different prices for different wavelengths (cheaper for the high ones)?

While I think this idea is cool in theory, and I'm generally happy to provide spectrometering assistance, I'm not down with it being billed as my plan/GB/project/etc. I know you didn't say that, but I just want to make sure my name isn't getting connected / tossed into the ring as a GB-runner or something like that.

I really do think the concept is neat - but it's still just a concept - that needs a lot more groundwork done to build the concept out into something more than that.

This could probably work better if someone with the capital bought a lot of diodes (say 100) to get a discount, sent them off to be spectro'd and then assigned prices so that "common" ones would be cheaper (cheaper than buying from O-like, to justify the purchase for those not interested on freaks) and "freaks" would be more expensive. The total price could be - say - 10% above the "GB" cost to cover the whole testing procedure. Or the organizer could take the best diode.

Edit: at this volume it might be interesting to dig Taobao or other arcane sources.

Fair enough, yes, this was my idea. I simply bounced it off of RHD when talking about his 505nm diode, and other ways to get it.

Also, this is basically a feeler right now. I just wanted to see if anybody would even want to give this a shot.

I'm not about to spend $5500 on laser diodes ... or even over 4 digits period. Unless that money is already in my hands, or buyers are locked in.

However, if DTR or someone similar wants to do that, I will not complain I'll send him a message,
 
Ideally DTR would get a spectrometer and setup a quick test device so that he could take readings of every diode he sells. He sells a lot so he could bin the freaks and sell for a premium on the B/S/T.


I also thought up an alternative to make this work as a GB, but it still involves a lot of gambling and work to organize. We pre-determine the amount of diodes and pre-distribute the prices according to rarity.

Exemple assuming high wavelengths are undesirable (P is the price per diode from the source)
lowest diode = 1.5*P
second lowest diode = 1.4*P
...
middle diode = P
...
second highest diode = 0.6*P
highest diode = 0.5*P

If P is $50, the lowest diode would cost $75, the highest $25 and the middle $50, and so on. This has to be done so that the total value is conserved.

For this to work we need to set the amount of diodes to be bought before people commit. The factors would then be adjusted according to the amount of diodes and willingness to pay for a freak. This would give members that are not that into rare wavelengths a lot of incentive to get diodes from the GB, while making sure those that give rarity more value will get the best diodes.

After everyone commits (each member to the n-th lowest diode) the organizer gets the money as usual and purchases. The tester does the testing, sorts the diodes from highest to lowest and everyone gets the diodes they committed to.

The gamble is that the "best" diode could be 505nm or it could be 515nm. Or they all could be low and someone ends up paying a lot more for one that is 1nm lower... but there's no way to remove this risk unless someone buys them all first.

This might be easier to achieve with the single mode 450nm diode, because there's far more demand for "regular" diodes than for low power high wavelength greenies. In the case of blues we could price-up both extremes (low and high WL) and price-down the middle ones.
