Hey everyone,
This is my newest green pointer for star gazing. A few people had shown interest in a 100mW 532mn copper bodied host with a side switch at the astronomy club so I built this one.
parts:
1x momentary switch The Lightning Stalker is selling (I actually bought 3).
1xefest 10440
1x sinner pen host (leftover provided by TheDukeAnumber1:thanks
1x 100mW set 532nm techhood module.
The information provided with the module states a voltage input range of 3-3.7v. with needing the room for a side switch 2 AAAs wouldn't work plus quite honestly after putting it on an LPM I was getting considerably higher readings with a fully charged lipo. single 10440 it is.
Internally I had wanted to put a 1N4001 diode in the extra space for reverse polarity protection but a V drop of .7 would reduce my power. When I measured it on the LPM it peaked at 73mW NOT the 100mW Techhood had advertised.
I have another module I might fiddle with the pot to get some more juice but for my purpose this will do.
Now here is the problem: the module doesn't fit into the host its a few thousandths of an inch larger than the host. The host had to be bored out with a dremel and after going back and fourth with the dremel and caliper I tried a heating technique.
I bored it out pretty close and used a small pocket torch to heat up the host where the module sits. the photo shows 91 degrees F but I actually heated it to almost 100 F. I cooled the module...Hey any effort to reduce thermal expansion helps:shhh:
The module slid right in where I positioned the button. phew..didn't want to get that stuck.
Im not sure at what point the host body could transfer too much heat to the module and damage the optic/diode but I feel 100 F was fairly conservative.
^^^ heat shrink tubing was added to prevent contact with the host body.
TLS switch is nice and smooth, Can't beat that!
The button is made from a small piece of 5/32 stainless TIG wire and the tail switch can be used as a master switch. The build is case positive and works great! soon I hope to be making some more just like this one.
