5000mw green laser? Is this site for real?






^ Is the language really necessary? I do agree the OP is acting like a 12 year old kid, and i'd put money on it that he is.. But that's a little inappropriate for the said minors ;)
 
i just got a similar 1w blue from alibaba. it was 61 dollars so i thought it was worth the risk. i specificly bs'd the seller saying i was a dealer and will check the power of this 'sample' and it seems powerful but without a lpm i have nothing to compare it with exept a lazerpoint green 200mw that just about lights a match at 3 feet. the blue sets wood on fire in a few seconds and burns paper at 6 yards. it also gets rather hot after a minute of use so i bear that in mind that the diode might cook if i use longer than 1 min.
the collimation of the blue is s**t at any distance but the green is very good.
i now ordered some more to try at about the 28 dollar mark without battery.
whats a good way to estimate power output without a posh meter? i have photo exposure meters with diffusers but i hear they wont read accurate.
could the more experienced members come up with a laymans power chart we can use to estimate how ripped off we get? just to guestimate by the factors you think matter.
im thinking to try the 5w and 8w. maybe they do what they say but i bet they burn out after a few seconds. i can waste 50 bucks for a laugh.

after testing the max amps from the lithium cells electricly you cant get over 5w laser power with a realistic efficiency diode unless theres a fat capacitor and you run in short bursts. that aside, theres still a chance the diodes are industrial rejects meant for far higher powers? could it be worth ripping some apart to mount the ld in a proper heatsink housing with some real batteries in place of those ultrafire jokes. i would be looking at ni-cd c or d cells in a 6 cell maglite housing. ni-cd still give better burst current than ni-mh.
 
It's really difficult to tell the power of a laser beyond a certain point. Like Jayrob once said "I can see the beam, so it's above 5mW, and you didn't burn yourself with it, so it's under 50W. So the power is somewhere from 5mW to 50W":crackup:
You can only compare relative powers if you have another pointer which you know the power of. And you definitely CAN'T compare different coloured pointers because the eye sensitivity to different colours is different. Green ALWAYS appears brighter for the same power.
As for whether you can push them, imo, it's not worth it. It's not alot more to buy a really decent diode and you can build a really nice pointer. Why risk paying 30-50 less and possibly getting nothing better, and likely worse, out of it?:thinking:
If it's just for experimental sake, of course, by all means, do try it, ans post the results here. We'd like to know too :beer:

so how much will efficiency of diodes vary? its easy to measure the power drawn from the battery, unless they regulate the diode with a stupid shunt reg. i cant imagine even the chinese doing that today now buck/boost chips are so cheap.
 
Alibaba is notorious for buying cheap garbage and reselling as hi end stuff. I found this out with ecigs. Warnings are everywhere NEVER to buy batteries from them, especially LifPo4, as there know to be counterfeit reject unprotected li-ion sells. Seen many post in other forums where people got... Well what they paid for, and worse. Any place that sell couterfeit batteries will sell underspec lasers as super spec lasers. If its too good to be true....

Like I said, we won't know with these things since no one has tried. We do know the efficiency of M140 and A140 diodes (as well as the new 9mm ones), but we have no idea which ones these companies are using for sure. Also, if what you said is true, i.e. the diodes are rejects, then the efficiency of them could be anywhere that is less than what we know of.
Maybe a more experienced member can help you with a ballpark figure on this, but I don't think there's really anymore information we know. You'll have to find it out yourself by taking the risk.
 
well i wont be stumping up 200 dollar for a power meter, for what a pointer does: burn stuff, be pretty, i cant see the difference between mine and the videos of wickedlasers stuff costing loads. bottom line is pointers are toys not scientific instruments. not kids toys sure but toys none the less.
maybe power in miliwatts is not the right kind of measurement for this stuff and we should get a real world standard everyone can use such as gilettes (old school)
 
Toys are normally harmless/safe (except for a few small parts that are a choking hazard), yes? That laser you have there can permanently blind you with no problem at all, in fact if you have good aim, you can blind someone for life a few K's away. Now please... BEGONE!!
 
sorry, but a toy is anything that is a device of pure recreational value. i can blind someone with a snooker cue if im an asshole. what do YOU call a laser pointer in the field that YOU use it? do you use it as a tool? a weapon? a rescue beacon? i hope not, because in either case a laser pointer no matter how much you love it or pay for it, or how many you have, is not the right tool for the job. ok the exception is an engineer pointing out parts of a massive structure to his team, any other presentation purposes in the classroom or board meeting are safer carried out with a long stick, and just as effective. long sticks also blind.
strict laws banning pointers over 1 or 5 mw are quite reasonable too. while i am unreasonably against these laws so i can play burning stuff, a pointer used to point at stuff is perfectly adequate at low power.
i see many on this forum who do USE lasers rather than just play with them.. they have purpose scientificly and industrialy, you may be one of them.
but in this case lets drop the term 'pointer' because its no longer appropriate. this thread is about pointers.
please dont think im a kid, im 40 years old with degrees and a phd under my belt, years of experience with high energy systems, and time served as a health and inspector with the british government. my first ever job was designing switch mode power units for westland helicopters. i might have some useful input to this forum. please dont order me to 'begone' just because my statement chalenged the seriousness of your passtime instruments.
 
A 200mW green laser would be very useful for a rescue beacon and...
