488nm diode?

Hello,

I was just wondering if there is a 488nm diode that isn't ridiculously priced? I looked it up and I didn't find much. I always liked 473nm lasers, but once I saw a 488nm argon laser I was in love :drool:

So does anybody here know if there is a 488nm diode that is actually worth buying?

IIRC Lazeerer ha(d)(s) one, check with him. It won't be cheap though, to give you an idea the 473nm diodes were $350.
I would expect it to be over $500.

As far as I know there were only a handful around for a short period of time. They were most likely surplus diodes. They are gone now. If there were anymore available you would see them for sale here on the forum.

The only place I know that does carry them is ThorLabs. Though you will likely need to take a loan out to buy one.

IIRC there were four from PL originally for $2000, snapped up right away. Good luck finding more I think styropyro has one

You won't be getting them unless you find samples somewhere. Lazereer does not have any he will part with, I know this as a fact

You can always gut one of the novalux protera units and put them into something.

Yes infact, there is a 488nm diode. i saw it sold in a laserglow system:

This laser is labeled as "collminated diode", separate from dpss.

The question was not "do they exist." The question was if they were affordable. A "request quote" pricetag is a resounding no, from that source.

The 20mW diodes were discontinued some time ago, though are still available in fiber coupled systems for a *modest* price.

Like cyp said, they exist, and they are readily available, but nobody in their right mind will buy them.
