445 killing spree :(

I broke a pin off at the ceramic insulator. Try soldering to that, like soldering the tip of a needle to a decimal point. Got it to work again, then the joint broke again.

Had the same with an bluray. pin just dont holded any force. have fixed it with epoxy but someday it broke again
 





Since it's the negative pin, why not try a dot of conductive adhesive (a good brand) and then use the case pin as the negative input?

Just hit the broken pin area with some fine grit sand paper and rubbing alcohol to clean and prep for the adhesive.
 
You know what, that just might work!

Silvershot, I hope you have a very steady hand! You would need to connect the topside of the substrate of the LD die to the case, while not touching the laser bar in the middle.

Edit: You can see here, how one pin is connected to the top of the laser bar, and the other is connected to the top of the substrate (the bottom of the laser bar). Since those bond wires from the pin on the right (should be the - pin) are probably broken if that pin is rotating freely, you would need to try to connect the case to the metal layer on the substrate.

It would be easy to break the + bondwires while doing this, so be careful. Those would be harder to replace...

I've managed to repair a bluray burner (200mW?) with a snapped off pin before, used the Superglue+baking soda trick to secure once solidly soldered.

30 gauge SMD solder works well :-)

Just also fixed one of rhd's "broken" red LDs, using modwire.. amazingly it worked although it is a bit ugly and there is damage on the top from overcurrent..
Diode lases somewhat, I suspect that it was damaged before the bond wire failed.

These sorts of threads make me really nervous. I'm building my 445 soon, once I get my kit in from Jayrob, and I've never build a laser before. It seems there are so many things that could go wrong. We should compile a thread with the steps to build a laser without breaking it - so everyone can learn from others mistakes.

A 445 is probably one of the worst first builds I would probably start with a PHR.

My diode was connected to the drive with a 2 pin female fan connector. My friend accidentally tugged on it and it came unplugged, however he accidentally plugged it back in wrong. So the polarity got reversed.
Now my diode is on its last leg, only putting out 260 mW and getting really hot.
To make it worse my "friend" is a very experienced laser builder and has a lot of rep on this forum.
