One reason iirc not mentioned that the 473 nm blues are so expensive is that they, like the 532nm are not direct diode handhelds- they are IR pumped lasers- a crystal converts the ir into green ..DPSS- while the 445 and 450 are not DPSS.
Not totally sure why some sell Kasio 445s as 446 447 etc except that they want no hassles form Kasio. Which is why we spell it this way- The forum has been warned/threatened by Kasio so we avoid the bots crawling the forum looking for us to slip up. Bots also are looking for IPS addys- email addys- your home phone numbers etc. Want some viagra spam??- just put your email out there and you will get some.
IF Someone wants to mess with you, they can take your addy and use the opt-in ( just the opposite as opt-out) and get ready for Spam City.

The ones I know are diode

405 (but I think a 404nm DPSS is possible)
445
650

The ones I know are DPSS

473
532
589
593.5

The ones I don't know for sure

561 (I'm guessing DPSS)
635 (I'm guessing diode)
671 (I'm guessing DPSS)

Just as confused as you.

@norbie
638nm is a diode BTW. Mitsubishi makes a few diodes that are that wavelength and the most popular one around here is their 500mW version that is capable of 1W+

I've gotten to that age where I no longer want to be hip and know all the current slang words. When I had to check the urban dictionary for the definition of a blumpkin I realized I'm just a big square and would be happy staying oblivious.

I am sure he means "Repped" :)

There are a lot of exotic wavelength with Diode Pumped Solid State Laser,
Laser Wavelength UV violet blue green yellow orange red infrared laser products
To collect them all you need a BIG wallet. :D

I wonder how they get those more obscure wavelengths like 488, 515, 542, 561 etc. Is it simple frequency doubling of an infrared wavelength like with the 532 and 473 lasers or is it frequency summation (I think that's what they call it) of two different infrared wavelengths like they do to get 589 and 593.5?

Sum Frequency Generation (SFG) you mean ;)

Surprisingly not used in any of these (to my knowledge)
488nm - gas, OPSL (using a VECSEL diode, or one with a perfectly round spot @ 976nm frequency doubled), diode (only as samples), and DPSS that I've yet to figure out. I know 488nm can be achieved in nearly all laser types.
515nm - new green diode or old method of Yb:YAG frequency doubling of 1030nm line (or argon line)
543nm - frequency doubling Nd:YVO4 1086nm (1085?) line. (or HeNe line)
561nm - frequency doubling Nd:YAG 1122nm line

I still desperately desire a 473nm and a 589nm...

then get one of those cheap B&W 473 nm lasers manyof us got for less than 70& they are not very oweful but one I got was 35$ and i makes 8 mW without any tweeking.

here is a dark red that was left out... 685nm diode

I have not seen anything on the B&W 473nm lasers you speak of. I just did a quick search and I see plenty of talk about them but no real info on where to get one other than broken ebay links and searching ebay for them brings nothing. Mind pointing me in the direction of a good source?

There's none listed on fleabay right now, just keep checking around, there's two versions that pop up. One that is for parts or non-working (needs to be realigned and might output 1mW), and another that works but isn't up-to-spec. Once again, realignment & the spot is usually pretty ugly on it. I think the ugly one is sold at $35 if I remember correctly.

Cool. I will have to keep my eyes open for one. What is the full name of the laser or will B&W 473nm suffice?

B&W 473nm should be good enough. I've found it searching simply "473nm" (as there's not more than 150 on at a time)
