405 pen at 125mA

Hmmmmm...... Well as long as the driver is still regulating I wouldn't worry too much about the chip itself. I have an LM317 that heats up pretty quickly too, and another one which barely gets lukewarm, but they both seem to work just fine.

How warm is it getting? I know you said it is heatsinked, but did you add any arctic silver thermal grease or anything like that when you installed the diode? That can really help. And finally, if the heat sink is getting hot quickly it may be a good thing -- meaning that heat is trasferring effectively. Have you ever ran one of these diodes outside of the heatsink? they get HOT. :o
 
Update -- Wannaburn wins this contest ;D and he still has his diode ::)
He has exceeded my driver but may have found the upper limit indication as DrLava & I found on the reds.

Gooey....It was the driver, made another one and the lm317 doen't get stinging hot right away.


Mike....what is the top end on these 6X LD?
 
Hydro --- I posted MY max at 190 mA. Wannaburn has gone over that by a bit and may have found the limit. I'm waiting for data and asked him to send data to DrLava also.
I don't like to post max data here since many can't figure it out and would damage a $300 Diode. Sorry but that's what I see.

Oh yea, and is yours actually set to and running at 190mA now? Or did you just crank it up for a few minutes? I may have to do some driver tinkering tonight :o
 
My Kryton draws 190 mA. I run it there for a max of 30 seconds for now. Tye Kryton provides good heatsinking. Wannaburn also reports a need for heatsinking. I have no data yet.

Now that I've got a spare 803T, I might crank up the juice on mine. :o
 
I think 170mA may be the magic number for me. How hot does the kryton head feel at 190mA after 30 seconds, mike?
 
The kryton stays pretty cool. My pen at 160 mA gets warm. I'm trying to be conservative here. I don't want a Noob to trash $300 because of misunderstood info.

hopefully a noob wont be playing with a $300 diode... start with the PHR's!!! :o
