3AA Maglight blue ray

Its taken a long time but I've finally put together my Maglight 3AA blue ray. I also think I may have come up with a nice solution to the loose Axiz lens (the half threaded 3 piece blue-ray lens to be specific) but it can be done with any lens I think, providing you have lathe. Basically I took the rubber o ring that comes with it from Axiz off and made a groove in the threads. I placed the rubber o ring in the groov and presto the threads hold the lens nice and firm. Take a look at the photos and let me know what you guys think.

What are the Holes in the heatsink For.? Looks Cool.

What 405nm diode you have in there.?

We need more details to admire your work more.:D

The Diode I used is a XJA-140 with a Micro fllexV5 driver. The current is set at 800ma right now. The intentions of the holes were to create more surface area to help cool the LD. Not sure if they actually help or not but I think they look cool too. I have also made these with RED open can LD's and GREEN too... The green modules you see everywhere now a days fit nicely in the head and they only require a 2 AA mag-light to power them. I used the mag-light host cause I wanted to stick to AA's to power my lasers, CR123's and most of the batteries I see used here on the forums are sometimes hard to obtain if you don't have a rechargeable one already. This way if your batteries ever die you can always find some pretty easily and away you go. The tail-cap switch is an aftermarket night eyes switch.
 
if its a 140 its not blue ray? nice build btw

Sorry for the mistake, I never knew there where differences between the blue diodes.

Just a heads up to anyone planning on doing this, make the groove a couple more threads closer to the middle of the lens. I had a bit of a hard time starting the lens in the Axiz module, just cause I put the groove to close to the end of the lens. It works great now but relocating the groove will make it perfect.

I may take the initiative and purchase a bunch of these lenses, modify them, and sell on the forum here. Also the aluminum head will be available for anyone looking to build one of these in the future. Just PM me if your interested and based on that I can get an idea of how many to make.

Im a fan of maglite builds, but I have to say the head you machined for yours is beyond cool.

445nm Blue <- diode you used

Very nice build, the trick with the oring is very neat. Myself and other members here have been using a small amount of teflon tape (stuff to seal pipe threads) on the lense threads and it seams to work well to reduce wobble.

I did make the adjustment knob and also the o-ring idea but I can't take the credit for the machining... My friend has been doing it for 40 years, hes retired and kind of mentoring me in the trait. He's the one that made the head. I drew it on paper and he created it. As for mag-lite I think I'm going to keep building various heads and such on the mag-light hosts their real cheap and easy to get.

I have tried the Teflon tape also. It does the job and that's exactly what I used before I got a lathe. But the creative possibilities become endless when you have the proper tools... :D Only one problem, there's never enough time.:banghead:

Maglites are cheap and have lots of aftermarket switchs and other things that make them fun to work with and with a little machining become nothing short of a sweeeet laser :) Glad you have a good mentor to learn from it definately makes a difference. My mentor had 44 years experience and was a big reason that I decided to get a degree in Machine tooling and CNC. Its nothing short of amazing :D

Especially coupled with a milling machine, anything you can dream, you can make. :D
