3 motor spiro now with movie that works:)

Nice stuff there! I just have to find the parts and figure out how the heck I'm going to get it all wired up! ;D
 





Just to make something clear, if someone wants to make a spiro with pc fans, you need 12v to get the max out of the motor, you can use ~5-7v but it'll be slow.
 
Yeah, we want to get it slow, well change the speed from really slow to full speed, to get the best patterns.
 
Yeah, you wanna start at 12v and go down, with a pot in most cases, not starting from 5v cause you won't have much control it'll just stop.
 
I'm using highspeed motors. They use about 100mA 6V at and spin at around 6-10K RPM :) They can also be overdriven to 12V as they are heatsinked already :D

I also have a very nice one that can go up to 20V and spins at around 30K RPM :o 8-) It uses about 40mA at that speed ::) I'm very happy with it :)

One of the reasons I may not use the computer fan drive board is that the highest output voltage is around 10V and the lowest around 7v, so not ideal.

computer fans would run alright on 10v, 12v is just the voltage the fan is rated for, it doesn't nessesarily mean the fan won't be fast at 10v
 
Thats a great tutorial I just need to get some pots, some motors and the battery holders, plus the mirrors and I am good to go! I have an old cd burner, can I get a good spinner out of that? Also where should I get the other 2(or maybe 3) motors from?

you can get little dc motors everywhere!!! even free lots of the time! go down to rat shack or the electronics shop in your area, and they are sure to have the little dc motors. some cd players have dc motors in them, but some have special little plugs that require a special signal to work(they are bad)
 
How could you use stepper motors from Cd burner's?
I got 4 lying around, also from HD's, but don't know if I should throw them away or what?
Any Ideas?

Keep the motors, man - find out how to power them up, and have at it ! you can make some kewl effects with teh steppers - the "poor man's galvos" !!! No idea how to do it, personally - just repeating what I have heard somewhere....

These are stepper motors as SenKat pointed out.

They are pretty much a precision motor since it's doesn't 'turn' like other motors... it 'steps' based on the potential in the different coils. I have a neat ship that I pulled out of a stepper driver that can control almost any stepper motor. Haven't worked on it at all yet, but I'd like to see it working sometime :)
