2nd build ever .. and i have failed.

m140 diode

1.8 driver

brand new rcr123a batterys.


im fairly confident i have everything together right .

i soldered the the driver to the brass ring ( copper whatever it is )

hooked the wires together on the diode click click .. nothing.

iso way to deduce what i did wrong .. can i test the diode on a battery ?

can i test the driver?

common problem ?

im kinda lost here .. its getting depressing cuz its dark out and i wanna test out my new laser :(
 





How can we help you if you don't show us what you got?
I can only guess what is wrong at this point but first to answer your other questions. No you cannot test the diode to a battery directly without killing it. Yes you can test the driver if you have an adequate test load. Common problem for newbies? Yes. Even pros mess up too because no ones perfect.

When you say you soldered the driver to the ring does that mean both the pos wire and neg wire? We really need to see what you have to analyze the situation.

Be careful not to give him the wrong idea, you don't solder any wires to the brass ring, just the outer ring on the battery contact side of the driver.

There's not much to screw up on that build but we must have detailed photos to try to help. The most common mistake is twisting the wires when screwing it together breaking a pin off the diode.

You didn't put the batteries in backward did you? You charged the batteries first right?

the rest i feel is right .. just looking for tests i can run to figure out what went wrong.

This is the part I am worried about - what precisely does that mean?

Did you touch the diode with the wires, while driver was powered?

You need to solder a permanent connection to the diode before applying any power. Disconnecting/connecting the diode while power is applied will kill both driver and diode.

Also yeah, pictures of the setup that you have built would greatly help. I know this means you probably have to disassemble everything, but there's no other way for us to know what happened.
You're basically saying "I did everything right, it doesn't work". What are we supposed to say? "OK"?

Did you install the batteries in the correct direction? If you get it wrong you either blew your diode or driver (even both). You need at least a multimeter even if it's a cheapo to check conductivity on your switch and pill solder connection. Need to check battery voltages. Make sure a wire didn't come off anywhere. Too many other questions without seeing pics of how everything is connected.

Best way to test driver is use a dummy load. That is a one ohm resister. Check you amperage and the voltages. Make your adjustments as needed. Then hook up the diode. Be before you make anymore photos...CLEAN YOUR NAILS
 
I can't seem to zoom up your second pic to see the solder spot. Will your meter let you check for continuity across from the 2 places you are soldering between? It is sometimes a pain to get the solder to actually stick between them. I always solder in multiple spots.
Did you verify all the wires connections are still good and nothing came off? I find the C6 builds to be a pain as there isn't much wiggle room between the heat-sink and the contact board/driver section (at least using a complete DTR module with driver. It's why when I recently built a couple LPC-826 C6 I doubled the top section:

If you aren't VERY careful you will twist wires too much and break something. Everything must spin without twisting as that video shows.
What did you follow to make sure the driver to pill and driver to diode connections were correct? Have to understand that if we had the unit in our hands it would likely be easy to figure out the issue but over the net it can be a pain. The clearer and higher resolution pics the better but there's only so much we can do without verifying what you check.
I know it stinks but you could always send it to one of us who know have built lots of them to figure out the issue. Usually all a reputable member would ask for is $ to send it back or of course the $ to repair it if necessary. Everyone has had issues regardless of how long they have been here;)
 
my red wire broke off the pill :( now im screwed.. guess i get to buy a new driver assembly
 
i ordered a pre assembled pill and driver .. guess ill just sit here and sulk till it gets here lol

Hey don't worry about it. We've all lost far more expensive stuff ;)
Mistakes help us to learn how to do things right.
If you feel your soldering needs refining I suggest looking at tutorials on youtube. With proper skill and proper tools the workload is greatly diminished.

im not terrible at it .. but im by no means a professional

your definately not prying that driver out i guarantee that

but i took the lazy way out so hopefully once this arrives all i have to do is shrink wrap some wires together and pray i didnt hurt the diode

i made this exact same laser for a friend a few months ago .. zero problems.

this is my luck rofl
