1995 Honda Civic Del Sol

Hey LPF,
Was wondering if anyone had any experience with the Honda Civic Del Sol at all. I am currently looking for a good first car and I found that this type of car can get up to 37mpg highway (s model).

I found 3 for sale in my area and was considering buying one of them.
I have read from reviews that the car is as reliable as the Honda Civic (the del sol is just a modified version).

Any thoughts on the vehicle?

I personally wouldn't buy anything older than 2005.

Also, even if it can get 37 MPG, if the exhaust is dirtier than a modern car than its not much better for the environment.

Though if I had it my way I wouldn't even own a car, so perhaps I'm not the person to ask.

If I had my way, I would buy a car from 2008-2014 :crackup:

But I can't afford much right now. I have found a few Honda Civics in my price range before 2004 though.
I was also interested in the Toyota Celica models from 1998-2003 but there are not many of them for sale in my area at the moment.

On gas mileage, I just liked how I wouldn't have to spend so much at the pump, but changing out a dirty muffler would probably be on my to-do list around 150000 miles. Mainly to save more gas :p

I wont drive anything that cant tow less than 8000 lbs..... cars are just scrap metal to me. First vehicle should be a truck or SUV that will protect your when you crash becuase 90% chance you will hit something, vehicle or object it will happen. I took out an entire brick wall with my truck and only got a small debt ib the bummer. Do that with a csr and its totaled plus you are hurry bad

That is a pretty good point. Driving a big vehicle will be safe a lot of the time due to all the momentum. But I would probably be spending more on gas and insurance than I make at my job. (pretty long drive to work). I just don't know how I would be able to afford a truck or SUV. Especially with gas prices being close to $4 a gallon. I wanted a bigger vehicle at first but after finding out how much I would be spending, I opted that out of my choices.

Edit: would you happen to know of any bigger cars or smaller trucks that would still be safe but get good gas mileage at the same time? Thanks!

Dude move from your state. VA is the problem then! My '14 silverado gets 20-21mpg combined (have gotten as high as 26.6 on the way home from the dealer on a 2 hour trip), is well under $200/mo (under $180/mo actually) and gas is $2.95/gal here and still dropping and insurance is under $800/year on it. Its brand new so it needs full coverage and its still under $800/year. Been paying roughly $700-800/year since I turned 16 and got a truck. Only went up a tad with my new truck. Fully loaded with on star, XM, backup camera, 8" touch screen and 18" aluminium rims.......I basically feel like I stole it from the dealer and practically did. I highly doubt anyone else could have got the deal I did. Like I said my jaw dropped when he told me this deal and I signed papers for it as fast as I could so he couldn't change it. $42,000 truck for under $180/month, cant go wrong. My dad almost said give me the same deal and ill sign for one too but he already has 4 vehicles of his own

Look into like a ranger/Colorado if you can find them. Older is still fine but make sure they aren't rusting out

And I just checked the local gas prices just now and it seems they are slightly above $3 a gallon. Didn't realize they dropped for my area.
But once I get through 4 years of college and get a good job, then I will probably buy a hummer. (I love those things).
Until then, I have to finish school with my $8/hr part time job and I may have to live with a small car.
Though, if I get good grades, my parents said they would pay for insurance so that might enable me to get a small truck.

That is true, for instance my 1999 Mazda
B4000 (Ford Stranger) looks great from the
curb, but underneath there is rust and
along the fenders it's about ready to pop
through. Around here though, if it's not
4WD, it's probably still stuck in the ditch
somewhere. Also, with a truck you can haul
big heavy stuff like DNA sequencers and vag
burners.
 
Don't buy a truck. Do you tow or carry stuff on a regular basis? If the answer is no, then get a car, and save your gas. 20 MPG is absolute shit compared to any car made in the last 5 years. Heck even my father's 2003 ford focus got 27 MPG.

People and their stupid trucks when they don't need them...

Also I don't know where you get your information, but I've been driving for 3 years and I haven't hit anything. So maybe just be a good driver and not burn twice as much fuel as a car by driving a truck.

A ranger with the I4 or small V6 can break 20 MPG and get close to 30 MPG. Hell, I had a F150 with the 4.9L straight 6 and got over 20 MPG with it.

A Ranger would be a great choice. I sold my truck earlier this year with plans to get a different one in the same body style. I've been missing that thing like crazy. Always have to borrow somebody else's truck. I had to have somebody drop off a gun safe. I'll need someone else to give me a ride to get a freezer. Do you plan on hunting?
 
Less than 30 MPG and its useless and shouldn't even be allowed to operate.

Under the absolute worst conditions for fuel efficiency, my car will still get 30 MPG, and at its best gets around 40. My cars worst is still better than a trucks best.

I'm going to love seeing automakers scramble to make their trucks actually efficient once governments start making stricter and stricter minimum MPG requirements.

Buying a used car on a limited budget your priorities should be low purchase price, low mpg, low insurance cost, and high reliability. IMO a toyota corolla will be what's best for your wallet.

Kinda makes me think you don't know what your talking about, the ranger I owned was extremely useful.

Substitute "useless" for "Massively inefficient" then. It still shouldn't be running.
 
I guess they should take all of the semis off the road then. :rolleyes:

There are many things that couldn't be done if it wasn't for pickups. My brother, step-dad and myself finally convinced my mom here and my step-dad should buy a truck. Now she wishes it had been done sooner. She'd haul all kinds of crap around in vehicles not meant for that type of stuff. The back of the interior turned to crap.
