18650 4.2v?

Just a little question...

I received my 18650 charger today and charged up my 18650...DUH
Anyway it started at 3.4v? I don't remember but I pulled it off the charger once it was green and now it's reading 4.2v, Is this normal? :can:

It's for a <200mW greenie btw

Yes, it is normal. Most lithium batteries charge up to 4.2V.

~3.6V is the voltage they have when they're out of juice. 4.2V is when they're charged.

No, 3.6 is nominal. 2.8 or so is empty.

I use a LOT of these batteries and build some of my own chargers, and I have to agree with Bionic-Badger. 4.15 to 4.2V is the usual target voltage for charging these type of lithium Ion cells. They are pretty much depleted by the time they reach 3.3-3.6V. If discharged below 2.75V, they can become permanently damaged.

Hey kage could I ask is there anything specific to charging these cells safely?
Also what components do you use in the circuit of these chargers if I may?

Edit: also in this thread it also agrees with Badger and Kage on the dead voltage of these batteries.
