17mm buck-boost driver (TPS63020 and LT6106)

do you have any new about the pcbs...

I have not yet placed the order... Its going to be pretty expensive and I just can't at this exact moment... I'm going to hopefully order them within 2 weeks so if you and foulmist can make it better using the simulator feel free to do so :beer: whatever the most updated board is at the time of when I order is the one I will use :) sorry if it's taking long...

I just saw this and read through the post. I'm on my iPad so I can't check the eagle brd files. How big is this PCB?

I'll order them from dorkbot if it will help and they aren't too expensive. I saw AnthoT said they would be expensive though...

If I don't hear back I will load it up in eagle tomorrow.

The PCB is two layer circular with a diameter of 17mm.
This is an open source project i'm donating to the community.

Thanks Luke, I read the whole thread and I think what you are doing is awesome. I was just curious if this was especially expensive TI make since dorkbot is pretty cheap. I was saying that I would be willing to order a batch and send some out to you, AnthoT and Tom if they were. I guess AnthoT may be talking about the WHOLE driver, not just the board.

I'll check in later today on this one.
 
Well I was talking about the whole driver... I've got some bits & peices of components for it now but I still got some more to get but I'll be ordering them soon, DorkBot never replies to me so I had tog find a new manufacturer & I did, the PCB's are cheap but the components are not ;)

But this is seriously a great driver & I still have every intention to make some :beer:

Yeah, after I re-read the whole thing it dawned on me that was what you meant. I wasn't thinking.

I'll look at the parts list. I am working on another driver and may have some components that are compatible. I need to do a Newark order soon too, so maybe I can get some parts and share them as well.

Sorry for the confusion. I couldn't figure out what was making the PCB so expensive. Doh!

Inductor XFL4020-152ME

DigiKey parts:
D1 - 568-6287-1-ND
C2, C3, C4, C5 - 445-8028-1-ND
R3 (Shunt, package 0805) - WSLA-.01CT-ND
R2 (current set trimmer) - 3214W-201ETR-ND

R1 (5 Kohm), R4 (10 ohm) - package 0603, use components with a good temperature coefficient (<100ppm/C)
C6 (100uF) - package 1206
C1 (0.1uF) - package 0603, any good decoupling capacitor
R5 (470 ohm) - package 0603
C7 (10 nF) - package 0603

R5-C7 form the loop frequency compensation network.
C8 is optional (secondary pole for testing purposes).
The values of R5 and C7 can be experimentally adjusted.
With the given trimmer R2 the output current range is 0.1 to 2.1 A

How important do you think it is that you stay with the coilcraft inductor?

I know TI recommends it on the data sheet, but can we just use a 2uH or 1.2uH low DCR inductor. That really adds to the cost having to source the inductor from somewhere else and pay extra shipping on it rather than just add it to an order from digikey or somewhere else.

ALSO: What package is that considered to be? It is 4mmx4mm but I don't see anything like 0805 or 0603 or TO220 so that I could find something comparable to substitute.

ONE MORE THING: According to the coilcraft website, they don't appear to be in stock either - so these kind of suck.

Would any of these inductors work? And if not, what did I miss?

as long as we're on the topic of inductor selection, how do you characterize harvested inductors?
 
This is quite possibly a good replacement for the Flex. Unfortunately, it still doesn't solve the >5.5V in or 5.5Vout problem that the Flex has too. Means they can't run 12x diodes.

Yea if this could be put into a nice 9x12 ish PCB it'd be more awesome :) but 17mm boards are good too :D

This can output more current then the flex also
