16340 VS 18650 battery

Hey ppl,
Can anyone tell me the difference between 16340 and 18650 battery. I only know that 18650 is better. I want to know will it output more power or just last longer?

IIRC 16340 is also known as CR123, they both are at 3.7v, 18650 is twice the size even with the same voltage :p output power is the same as far as voltage goes, im not 100% sure but 18650 have a higher mAh so they should last longer

16340 batteries are about half as short and a little thinner than 18650 batteries.

Both batteries are 3.7v (typically) meant to work between 3v and 4.2v.

18650 batteries have a high mAh rating - milliampere-hours - meaning that the battery will last longer.

Also 18650 batteries can support a much higher draw.

16340 is a secondary lithium cell the same size as its primary cousin, the CR123A.

18650 is a common size of secondary lithium cell, often what laptop batteries are made from.

As far as size goes, naming convention is DL0, where D is the diameter in mm and L is the length in mm. The 0 I believe represents a cylindrical cell.
I.E.
18650 ->18mmx65mm cylindrical
16340 ->16mmx34mm cylindrical

The #16340 is ~ 1/2 the size of the #18650 cell.

The #18650 cell is over 3 times the capacity of the #16340 cell.

They are produced by the millions,

so improvements are implemented frequently.

Not grave digging but just so other noobs like me know, 2x 16340 will produce 7.4V compared to 3.7V of 1x 18650. This can be a major factor when it come to powering the laser. The 18560 will yield much longer life however since it generally has much higher mAH i.e. 16340 = 650mAH and 18560 = 3000mAH

As people have already said, the 16340 is thinner (16mm diameter) than the 18650 (18mm diameter). So if your host can accommodate the width of 18650, then you'll have some 'slop' using a 16340. Here's a thread that goes through various options to make the 16340 snug so it doesn't rattle around.

How do you define better? A 16340 is smaller in size. It could be better. A 18650 have lager capacity. It could be better as well.

16350 is 18mm wide and 35mm long
16340 you see is close in length and not as thick.

26650 is 26mm wide and 65mm long that's why 18650's fit with a sleeve to compensate for width as length is the same.

26650 = 26mm wide and 65.0mm long.

Sometimes a host that holds an 18650 or two 16340 will also take two 18350 but not always, and two 16340 won't always rattle, sometimes they fit tight enough, in my C6 host they don't rattle inside but if they do then just put some tape around each battery, it's only 2mm difference in diameter.

Rarely in my experience, especially if any kind of protection circuit is involved.

It's usually not the width that's the problem but the extra length.

Manufacturer tolerances can be off a little and protection circuits can add some that's not counted, I wrap a piece of paper inside the tube if there's any rattle and a quick shake will bring a snug battery out, I hate a loose rattley battery, I like them snug so the unit feels solid.

In the same space you can fit one 18650 you can fit two 16340s (more or less), so even with your numbers the comparison should be 1700 mAh vs 3000 mAh. They are usually in series so it may be 650mAh@7.4V vs 3000mAh@3.7V, but as far as energy density goes it's the same thing.

One 18650 does hold quite a bit more than two 16340 cells, which is logical since it is wider making quite a bit more volume (18^2 / 16^2 ~ 1.25 times the area) and has half the non-energy-storing stuff in its length.

The capacity specified in mAH is generally used to estimate runtime. Using two 16340 in series means runtime is still based on 650mAH but driving something @ 7.4V as opposed to using one 18650 rated at 3000mAH driving something else @ 3.7V . That is, the 18650 will 'run' roughly 4.5x longer than two 16340s.
