Hey all, I just found two different articles that say the Phillips/Lite-on joint venture (PLDS) will have a 12x Blu-ray burner out by the end of this year. That ought to make for some interesting lasers :) Hopefuly these drives will use a new diode and not an overdriven 8x diode.

me 3!!

but they would not over drive the diode they would use another or improve the optics or layout design

SWEEEEET!

Granted, I've only built one blu-ray laser, I cant wait for that.
I've never seen even a 6x but my I know that my PHR at 125mA is frikkin awesome so i can imagine that a 12x is going to be AMAZING!!

Uh, i don't see any price, nor effective, nor also just extimated ..... wondering about it, also :p :D

I would say so, they are getting those 8x BDR-203 up to 500mW I think.

1W? Holy @$!^#&*$@&$^$ Batman!!!! Sooner or later, they may have to put tighter regulations on these drives if they are about to become a class IV laser product!
But I can't complain.

:D

I wonder if the release of a 12x will drop the price of the 8x and 6x.

all in time my friend. someday....SOMEday they will have 24X blu-ray burners, and we'll be able to get 8x sleds for 10.99 at walmart lol!

but yeah... my PHR's are quite awsome.... and i've yet to even touch a 6x... so im drooling over the posibilities of the 12x... IMO blue burns better than red "for what i burn anyways" so this is quite exciting.

The other issue is that burner speeds aren't just limited by diode power but spindle speed of the disc media. I believe one of the articles mentioned that highest DVD buring speeds are at 24x with a spindle speed of 12000 RPM. The author said that speed would allow Blu-ray to burn at 14x. So until the guys making Blu-ray burning media get on the ball with more stable and tougher discs it might be a while before we see anything close to 20x or above.

patience patience, stewie is going to dominate the world soon :D
