Hello,

Long story short, my Blu-ray laser build "adventure" that started in August with another party was completed by Dave (daguin) a couple weeks ago.

Here are the basic stats:

Host: MXDL 3405
Diode: Pioneer 12x BDR-205
Heatsink: Copper
Lens: 405-G-1
Driver: FlexDrive v5
Batteries: 3 x Eneloop AAA 1.2v 800mAh rechargeables
Power/Current: 465mW @ 360mA

I also have a pair of ML7 (style 35) glasses for safety.

Overall, I really like the look, feel, weight, and performance of this portable Blu-ray laser.

When properly focused, this thing will burn just about anything in its path.
So far, I've been able to light a match at ~30 ft. Of course, more testing "fun" to come...;)

After ~45 minutes of "On" time as of 12-09-09, the 360mA current setting for this 12x diode seems to be working well. Should future 12x Blu-ray diode testing results warrant a "safe" increase in current, I'll probably go for it.
Time will tell.

The only complaint I have for this build is the limited run-time on the three rechargeable Eneloop AAA's.
This Blu-ray laser gets around 10 minutes of max power use before I see (and feel) a noticeable reduction. I assume this is probably normal for a powerful Blu-ray build of this type.

I never leave the laser running for more than 60-90 seconds straight.

Once I acquire a meter, I'll be able to make more accurate readings and assumptions.

Since most of you know much more about lasers than myself, I'll let the following pictures tell the rest of the story.

Thanks again to Dave for his help, and happy lasin' everyone!

Enjoy the holidays,
Mark

Have you tried testing how long a set of primary (non-rechargeable) AAA's last? At the current that the 8X and 12X are sucking up, 4.5V may make a significant difference over 3.6V.

Peace,
dave

Hi Dave,

I haven't tried a set of primary AAA's yet, but I certainly will.

It will be interesting to note the differences between rechargeable and primary AAA longevity.

Don't you just love the power of the 12X?

You won't be regretting it anytime soon, I know I haven't!

Have you tried white tip matches? I've gotten about 20 feet away to light a white one..

I have a box of pastel colored matches from the "Misty" cigarette days. Violet is the only laser that will light them.

Peace,
dave

Yeah I bet. I tend to obsess about making my things unique.

I'm curious, how much did it cost you to do that?
