100 WATT LASER $31 WORTH IT?!?!

you get the bar for mounting, then the actual laser diode chips and some solder, you have to then precision mount the diodes to the bar which i've been told is a royal pain in the ass. taken from the ebay auction
"If you have mounted a diode chip before, you will most likely find mounting a whole bar even easier (as they dont blow away if someone sneezes on the other side of the room) as long as you are carefull to ensure good solder wetting to avoid voids. An acomplished enthusiast could expect to get 3w of green without too much trouble out of a side pumped rod DPSS, although this is obviously not a project suitable for your average first time experimenter."

what is this "bar"? does it collimate? does it drive? I need more info...

you probably won't be able to collimate it to a beam easily, since you are essentially taking a bunch of tiny IR diodes and mounting them into a big array, but if you did manage to wire it properly then you just need to mount it on a big heatsink and power it up at probably 2-4 volts or so at a ton of amps

so essentially they're good for pumping another medium or burning but not for collimating into a beam

i see...

so you have to solder all the individual diodes to the bar??? If so, that would be VERY VeRY hard. Ad as MM said, these aren't for beams, they are for pumping crystals like in greenies, if you are expecting a 100W beam that can burn stuff from 200M, forget it with this bar.

Its a diode bar of that you need to mount onto a block of copper, which will act as both an electrical connection and heatsink. Not a task to be taken lightly by any measure. That auction will probably end for ~$200 and its a good $200 down the drain unless you know exactly what you're doing. Even if you know what you're doing, you'll need a lot of luck on your side. You can get them ready to go (IE, ready to be powered and heatsinked) as mounted diode arrays, just cost a bit more. I'll sell you a 20W mounted array for <$200 :P (tis Coherent's IIRC)

lol this title was a bit misleading...but after reading the link i understand now.
so you can use this to create a laser of this power? not bad for 31 bucks, although idk how hard it would be to do...

Heres one with the heat sink and a TEC built in and ready to go. The only bad thing is you don't know the mw. I bought one and it works. I'm currently waiting for a lens that will focus the beam.
It burns stuff, but it must be held close to the end of the fiber optics.

For the $10.00 to $15.00, its a good deal.
I'm guessing, but I believe the higher the ma the more powerful.
and these are IR, so be careful! and use goggles.

The above link is for a $14.00 one.
Heres a link for a $9.00 one

These are not mounted diode bars, just individual diodes in those containers. A mounted diode bar will draw Amps at the minimum - most likely a few tens of amps. Without knowing the voltage or efficiency of those 835nm diodes and going off the mA alone, I'd guess they're ~300-600mW optical output.

True, they are not, However for the price they are great and easy to work with. I believe you are correct on the mw, At least from my experience with them, thats about what I guessed.

Hell, the price was good on that 100W bar so I picked it up (~$85 shipped and I've bought from that seller before anyway). I'm guessing the chance is >90% I'm gunna screw it up, but I'll give it a shot and let yall know how it goes.

Great! Good luck with it.
I hope to see a writeup with pics on the assembly.

awesome, now I can see how it will work...

Regarding that, how Would I power that? would I need a driver? thanks.

AFAIK it has a driver in it. Though maybe I should shut up and let the person who has one talk :P
