    Windows 10 slow?

OSes will usually keep data and libraries in memory to speed up loading. On Windows, for example, SuperFetch will keep programs you're likely to run in memory so that you don't have to retrieve the data from disk. Likewise, Linux will keep file data in RAM as well. The OS will always free up...

    Windows 10 slow?

Windows will also cache stuff in the extra memory for faster loading. It doesn't make quite the difference it used to before SSDs, but it's still decent. I was pretty happy when I could reliably disable page files entirely. My browser setup is a bit excessive too. I have about 48 Chrome tabs...

Upgrade my 2009 MacBook Pro - new version

RAM and SSDs should be easy to install in a PC laptop provided it isn't some ultra-light version or something special. My own laptop annoyingly has 4GB of RAM soldered to the motherboard and a single RAM slot so I get some mismatched 12GB RAM configuration with an 8GB DIMM. You can usually...

    Windows 10 slow?

I used to have 12GB, but then doubled that when I kept hitting the rails. I keep both Firefox and Chrome browsers open all the time for different reasons, and often they'll be using 3-4GB of RAM each. Then there's the OS that likes to keep things in memory, and other stuff like games using 6GB...

    Windows 10 slow?

But they are explaining to people why they're disallowing certain or all devices to not be on during phases of the flight by saying it can interfere with the aircraft. Yeah, maybe their explanation doesn't capture the whole story, or may not even apply so much these days, but it's not the...

    Windows 10 slow?

Yeah, I thought that was part of it too. Asking a the airline attendants to determine the capabilities of each and every portable electronic device is difficult, if it can be determined at all. So just having them all off during the critical phases of the trip is easier to manage.

Upgrade my 2009 MacBook Pro - new version

If you like OS X, you can just get a newer (but used) Macbook Pro and you'll be just fine. You just need to get one with at least 8GB of RAM, and i5 processor, and an SSD. See if you can find a used Mac Pro and buy that. This is coming from a person who exclusively uses Windows except for...

    Windows 10 slow?

Though there are some cases of interference with older aircraft, the FCC bans cellphones on aircraft not because of interference to the aircraft, but interference with cells on the ground given that the phones are moving very quickly and at altitude. Cells are mostly intended to be used...

    Windows 10 slow?

Have you guys tried messing with your Power Settings? I've read stuff like the PCI Express link state power savings may cause freezes and stuff. Windows 10 has more advanced power saving features, but they might not do quite as well in an in-place upgraded system. You can also try the old...

In a pickle, car pickle. Help!?!

It also helps to not use up much of the credit available on the cards, as that can indicate that there are some financial problems amiss. I think only in super exceptional circumstances have I gone past 50% of my CC's credit. And some people get into bad habits, feeling like money burns a...

    mini RGB projector Spiro Deluxe!!

I remember receiving a mis-described projector from DinoDirect and they went through huge amounts of effort to make me just accept store credit rather than have them pay to have the product shipped back. Eventually I obliged and got another tiny projector. They seem to have okay parts in them...

In a pickle, car pickle. Help!?!

Don't take out a loan to pay for a downpayment. In fact, never take out a loan to pay for part of another loan. That'll only hurt your credit score even more as there will be more debt held against you. Keep one credit card (each additional dings your credit) and simply pay off the balance...

Seeking links to good knife edging techniques material.

It's possible, but the main issue here is that you need a very large lens compared to the incoming beams if you want to treat the beams as simple rays for purposes of collimation. At that point, you might as well be using a set of mirrors, or a bunch of prisms (such as in a fresnel lens).

In a pickle, car pickle. Help!?!

Unless you have other assets or job qualifications that can back up your credit, I don't know if one year of credit -- even though you've been good about payments -- will get you real good terms on the lease. Maybe just talk to the dealership you're planning on leasing from and see if you...

    Open source battery forum?

"Open source" really only takes off when the cost to implement ideas is cheap -- such as software. For other stuff, the cost of utilizing an "open" idea outweighs return on investment. Even those "open source" hardware designs are of little value except for designing new things, because it...
