Hi Guys,
I am an Australian who is new to this forum. I am a ghost tour guide. In Australia it is illegal to buy or import a hand held laser pointer. This is one of the tools of the trade in ghost hunting where they use a battery operated laser pointer on a tripod that has a cap defraction on the end to split the laser into many small beams to highlight part of a room or area.

Since i cant buy one i am wanting to know what parts i would need to make a 5mw laser pointer (must be portable) and where you suggest buying these parts. Thanks in advance.

Hi, welcome.

I've seen them using lasers with diffraction gratings for ghost hunting on TV. Pretty cool idea.

You'll probably want to get something a little more robust than what was suggested above. For one, it's going to have to be turned on for extended periods of time, so a push button-style host isn't going to cut it. You'll definitely need a "clicky" style on/off switch. Secondly, depending on the power you want, you'll need it to have a fairly decent heatsink so you can run it for a while. I've got a 30mW green in a pen style host and it gets hot after a few minutes.

I'm not sure what color would be best... I'm assuming most people would probably use green because it's the most visible at lower powers, but red might be an option for you too as it might not mess with your eye's night vision as much. I don't know, just a thought...

Anyway, good luck! You've got balls of steel!

Ok, I'm curious... how does one use a 532nm laser with a diffraction grating to hunt ghosts?

Well, from what I've seen, the laser with the diffraction grating is set up on one end of a room or hallway, which then shoots little dots all over the other side of the area that the ghost hunters are checking out. Then they watch for disturbances in the pattern, shadows, dots twinkling or dots getting blocked out, etc.

Ah, I see. Thanks for the explanation. ;)

and then they notice the shifting around that cheap green lasers always do and they're like "OMG, that can't be my crappy green laser, it must be a ghost"

lol yeah that's a good point. All the beams would be acting weird at the same time though, right? Or maybe you'd only notice the dots that you are looking at at the time. hmm...

Thanks guys for the responses. And yes we have found and recorded unexplained voices and pictures etc. Because i live in Australia and laser pointers are not allowed to be imported do you think i would be allowed to import the parts as mentioned above to make the pointer.

Yes, only complete laser pointers are controlled.
