Are there any cost effective and simple ways to impede radio and similar signals?

On a scale of say 2 feet, 5 feet.. small :) something you could say place near a radio antenna or cell phone that would stop reception?
 





Thank you, I know about faraday cages, I was wondering if there was any more makeshift method, eg. making a noise transmitter, magnets, or what have you :)

There are jammers, they are illegal in a lot of places, you can do a google search for cell phone jammer on google or dealextreme.

Other then those, I dont know of any more options
 
If you do a google search for cell blocker or cell jammer you will find a wide assortment of these.
Be careful because some are junk and some work great. Read the reviews carefully.

Also be aware that the use of these in public are illegal unless you inform people there is a jammer
in use because you could conceivably prevent someone from making an emergency call.
With the exception of hospitals and various law enforcement like the Secret Service.

What about a microwave?
It would have to be inside however... It's built to keep RF/Microwaves inside the shell though....

Yes, but only the door (window) of a microwave oven is shielded.
And only microwaves with wavelengths of 12 cm.
 
The rest of it is made of metal which microwaves don't travel through well... if it wasn't shielded on any of the other sides you would get fried standing next to it... The door has to be specially shielded cause it's made of glass and therefore allows the waves to pass through it easily...

As far as wavelength I don't know.
 
I didn't imply that you would get fried standing next to it, just that it wouldn't prevent seepage of RF energy.
And I just told you the wavelength. If you don't believe me, look it up.
 
Noise transmitted at the same frequency would undoubtedly be effective.. I expect an old cell could be hacked into a transmitter fairly easily.

Does anyone feel like testing the magnet theory? I'm not a cellphone user and don't have any magnets larger than the plastic ones on the refrigerator.. of course, don't put them too close to your phone or radio... :D

He is right... just about all radio bands are government regulated (with good reason). What your trying to do is very illegal.... Its pretty easy to do though even at a wide 1-2mile radius.... however, unless you find some very convincing reason I don't think i'm going to bother to share =P

If anyone has some solid info regarding jamming/disabling a neighbor's stereo / "boom box", I would be most appreciative. Short of an "EMP Cannon" kind of thing.

(Blow guns are also a cost effective, and silent approach to disabling many types of speaker cones) ;)
 
^^^ Sorry, but I am convinced that anyone who abuses cats are going to burn in hell. It's akin to pedophilia.

Blow guns are not practical.

I DID try something a couple of years ago... using ham radio equipment. Didn't work. I pumped a 5 watt VHF/UHF signal through a VERY directional antenna (a handheld yagi - designed for radio direction finding); "through the wall" at the offending apartment. I know that this CAN interfere with certain (old) televisions. Oh well.

I could go as high as 10 watts w/ HF, but I don't have an appropriate indoor antenna. Maybe a resonant magnetic loop. (shrug).

In the meantime, I just have to call the cops over and over and over again... sooner or later, *I* win, because the cops get tired and start handing out citations.

The OP stated he was interested in a 2 to 5 foot radius which if used inside his home would
probably not adversely affect anyone unless he lives right on top of his neighbors.

As far as cheap internet available jammers/blockers go, something like that would run $50 to $100.
A 20 to 50 foot radius would run $500 to $1000.
1 to 2 miles? The authorities would find you in a New York minute if you blanketed the city like that.
Remember, it's a felony. 250,000 fine and/or 10 years in jail.
