I got a great Idea for all the cockaroaches in my house, buy a burning laser and shoot 'em off the walls. Or, at least piss them off. As you can tell with the thought process I was doomed from the start....

I proceeded to Ebay where I sarcastically made an offer 0f $60 for this:
LZGN532-500 808nm Infrared laser pointer, listed at >$120.

Of course the guy accepted and now I'm getting something I don't even know what it is. Even worse I thought if it does'nt burn roaches at least I can play with my cat. BUT, after looking at the description(aka, title) i realized it is infrared.

Will I even see this laser? Feel free to educate. Please know I realize how dumb I must sound to some of you so try to keep the hacking at a minimum.

you don't give enough detail about the power. Like, what power is it?

you may or may not see a faint red glow. ir lasers are dangerous because you cant really see them and they usually have lots of power.

also, burning cockroaches is not going work with a laser. In my experience insects with with an exoskeleton are protected from it for a short time. Basically they run before they ever get hurt. and you have to be with in 1 foot of them.

An actual link to what you bought would help...

If you can contact the seller and ask to cancel the transaction, do that...

An IR pointer will appear to be a very dim red laser pointer. This is not actually the case though, so extreme care must be taken.

EDIT: I lived in an apartment once where I did have a cockroach problem. Ended up cleaning up EVERYTHING so it was spotless, smoke bombing the place, than came back, aired it out, and brought sealant.... went over everything, and sealed EVERYTHING... went through a bunch of cans of a foaming sealant. Never had cockroaches after that. I also had an exterminator come in before and after applying the sealant, so that probably helped as well.

Here is the Listing....

GN#500 532nm High Power Burning Infrared Laser Pointer | eBay

It's pseudo 500mW... 808nm...

If you are planning to shine this Laser on the shinny backs of
insects... You had better get appropriate Laser Safely Goggles
first...

It will be difficult to shine an almost invisible Laser beam onto
a target...

If you have cockroaches climbing your walls... I would suggest
you call an exterminator....

I heard boric acid works really well.
For what.... making the IR Laser beam visible....

Actually laser kind of sucks in dealing with insects that have a thick carapace. I was playing around with 800mW 405nm and 1.2W 445nm, neither did anything aside from making the beetle run, I ended up using a tried and true approach... rolled up cpu magazine.

Great responses-
Right on all you who replied, and thanks for taking it easy on me.

My house has an open ceiling with 18' at highest point so the conventional tools don't reach the bugs. I think I'l get some tubes of sealant and go to town for the roaches.

Imagine all the squigily burn marks all over my walls if it did work. HA

Anyway, enough of the problems of my house.

Bummer- I wanted to play with a cool laser, now I dont even want to open the package.

Thanks

ir is cool. but it is more dangerous than the visible lasers. Good luck with your infestation lol

IR is just too dangerous without goggles. Please don't try it without 808nm rated goggles.
You may not even feel it causing injury to your eyes.

Again try asking to cancel the transaction if you still can.

Try a 65W+ gas laser... that might work. =P

Or just soak them in gas first and then shine them =P

ended up using a tried and true approach... rolled up cpu magazine

:cryyy::cryyy::cryyy::cryyy::cryyy: Is the magazine alright? Poor thing...

How about cleaning up your mess. If you keep your home clean, Bugs are not interested anymore and go away.

Call an exterminator, D'uh. They have this new stuff thats makes the roaches sterile. And will also sterilize any roaches that eat the dead ones. In a few weeks, no roaches.

My niece moved into my house and she brought them with her. I freaked out, and called the exterminator. $75 and no more roaches.
