Has anyone worked on laser weapon projects...

I havce thought of 1 i think would be good weapons for the government...

Imagine this... a clear plastic ball... inside the ball isa bunch of diodes aimed out at all directions... all hooked to an assortment of drivers inside those... and in the center is the battaries seperated by 1 small tab of plastic...

put on your goggles... pull out that tab, the battaries slam together toss the ball into your opponents AO (area of operation) and now they are all blind cause they looked at the ball of shining diodes... in a few seconds (or minutes) the diodes overheat and break... now you enter and clean up the enemies.

a single use laser grenade :)

i have a few questions about my plan though...
how many diodes can run off one driver...
how many diodes do you think would be a safe bed to blind opponents at all angles...

This is all theoretical considering the cost it would take to make one and the self destructive properties of it... itd take alot of money to get one made...

there IS a possibility that the batteries would die before you pop diodes...that could make it a recoverable weapon... BUT from a military standpoint, destroying all the diodes prevents your enemies from gathering the spent grenades and reusing them aginst you

A bit on me... so you dont think im some random guy making laser weapons... I am a soldier in the US army so my mind immediately wanders to helping me perform my job.

any thoughts?

Protocol IV on Blinding Laser Weapons prohibits the use of laser weapons specifically designed, as their sole combat function or as one of their combat functions, to cause permanent blindness to unenhanced vision, that is to the naked eye or to the eye with corrective eyesight devices. The High Contracting Parties shall not transfer such weapons to any State or non-State entity.

Ummmmm. This is a disaster waiting happen and it wouldn't be effective for many reasons.
 
All directions on a ball? I'm not sure if I got my math right but that's 360x360. 129600 diodes later...

we would kill them afterwards :) duh.
and due to cost of this single use device... I dont think we (as a government) would use them in the common soldier situation... if noone knows of the operations... whos gonna tell the geneva convention :p
 
Why militarize lasers when you can just yell "pew pew pew" really loudly and have the French surrender?

Flash grenades not good enough? I'm all for helping our soldiers, but why over complicate something that already exists and is considerably more rugged and less expensive in its current incarnation.

yes ur math is right... but common sence says thats not reality... how as long as you put "enough" to cover a large nough area in a small room you dont literally need every degree in every angle... how many is enough?

and another question... would each diode need a lense or can we just let them blast light without a lense... will that still blind them?
 
Yes, brainstorming with lasers is fun, but apparently you did not look around very much here before posting. A fair amount of the ire here is directed at those who play fast and loose with laser safety. You pop in and ask about the feasibility of purposefully blinding people (even bad guys), just seems like poking a hornets nest while nude, an all around bad idea.

Though your intentions seem good, we all know which road is paved with those.

no, no i fully understand being weary of new members, i come from a long line of questionable forums and completelyunderstand the crazy noob that is deffinately up to no good.

but as ive stated several times... the cost in building one just to blow the precious diodes for no apearent reason pretty much means... im not building the thing... thust thinking abt how it might work (im on a 24 hour shift and have nothing better to think about)

ive also been designing a 4w handheld... thatll be a fun expensive build... but thats a whole nother thread
 
dazzling laser would be ok as long as no permanent damage. also it dont say you cant make the enemy burst into seizure in the old gen con.
 
Let's assume that we are talking about 1W diodes here. So 1W of optical output per diode, multiply that by a thousand, just for a good number, that's 1kW of light energy... now, wasn't it someone in another post that found like 50W LEDs?

Just stick twenty of those in, instead :P Would cover more area, anyway, since LEDs are a lot less focused.
