A lens spanner wrench:

Spanner Wrench(1/32") Great Tool for Lens - eBay (item 160410529135 end time Apr-03-10 23:07:17 PDT)

This is for removing lenses and optics mounting rings that have two small holes on either side of the optic:

They are commonly found in high-end portable lasers and lab-style lasers. This tool is indispensable for anyone interested in repairing DPSS lasers.

I have one of these spanner wrenches. They are absolutely the BEST possible answer for removing lenses that have the holes in the mounting ring or for a locking ring with the holes in it, to lock the lens down into position. No more fumbling around with two small screwdrivers or other pointed objects, trying to get them both to sit in the holes at the same time, & then to try to apply torque to them to get a stubborn ring loose. Also, no more scratched lenses, when one or both of your pointed objects slips out of its hole, & scrapes across the lens surface. GREAT TOOL & well worth the expense.

I had to use a blow torch to start a piece of Magnesium, forgive me if I have trouble believing that a Laser (Unless really high powered) would do anything to Magnesium but reflect off. However I would be more than happy to be proven wrong on this matter.

I am guessing that's magnesium Oxide in the picture, it's what you get when you burn magnesium metal, it's white powder. You take it as an antacid, it won't burn.

Serendipity - Phoenix. I'm looking for one of these, exactly. (Spanner wrench with pointed tips.) -- need to clean one of my PGL's from the inside.

If anyone has any clue where to get these preferably *not* from eBay, in the US, please do let me know; (and, for that matter, others reading this thread, for future reference) -- otherwise I'll take the chance on the 'bay...

Would a pair of lock ring pliers work? Otherwise, try places like harbor freight tools, etc.

*edit* Just google 'optical spanner wrench', you'll find plenty of choices. With you being a camera buff, I'm kinda surprised you don't have one already. heh.

Description of some usefull items
+ price for 1piece
+ Where to buy

Air Blower: Helpful for cleaning a lense/keyboard, blows dust away - $5 - here

Balloon: For popping - $1 - here

Batterie tester: Shows you the Voltage of your batteries - $12 - here

Dichro: Lense for combining two wavelengths to one (650nm+532nm=yellow), resulting color depends on the power of the lasers - $30 - here

Diffraction grating: For a wavelength comparison test or for star effects - $10 - here

Digital Multi Meter: A must have for Voltage, Ampere and Ohm tests, also required for some laserpowermeters - $10 - here

First Surface Mirror: For reflecting 100% of the laser beam (normal mirrors reflect about 75-80%) - $7 - here

Glas cube: For optical experiences - $4here

Flash paper: Magican accessoire which go up in flames when ignited - $5 - here

IR filter: Tests how much IR is in your laser - $10 - here

Laserpowermeter: You´re able to test the real laser output, there are some good products around from lasersbee, Kenom and nospin, mine (HLPMII) is able to test lasers form 1-200mW - $60 - here

Lensepen: Usefull for cleaning a lense, I also recommend good bottom swabs - $10 - here

Magnesium: Strong reflector with a high albedo - $1 - here

Matches: For burning experiences - $1 - here

Safety goggles: Make sure to get them for all lasers over 5mW if you want to use them indoor, different laser wavelengths require different filters and glasses, but many of them reach a bigger spectrum and safe you from many wavelengths - You must get the one specified for your laser, otherwise it is totally useless - $30 - here

Smoke Cartidge: produces steam to allow you to make your laserbeam much more visible, also used for testing leaky flats or houses - $1 - here

Tape: For burning - $2 - here

Tripod with Clamp Mount: Holds the laser, alternative is a clothes pin - $5 - here+here

Uranium marble: For fluorescing experiences, especially with 405nm lasers - $5 - here

I don't know if anybody already has or not, but if someone could do the list of where to get the stuff in the UK that would be great as waiting for the international shipping takes time, as well as additional cost for it to come overseas.

If anyone does or already has made a British(or even an EU) version of this type of list of equipment needed please PM me the link.

Thanks

Peter

Wow! First, I gotta get one of those money trees! I guess they don't sell it on Amazon.
Nice list of accessories! I should start to gather them soon...without money tree. ;)

If you take a mylar space blanket and wrinkle it up, then hang it on a wall and shine a laser at it then it produces an awesome spider-webby type reflection...it's hard to describe so you should just try it. They're usually under 2$

Also, some kinds of Recordable CDs can split the beam into 4 or more...if you have some disks laying around I suggest you give it a go.

:)
