@morgan, pontiac made the thread and had a few pics and videos of the diode array burning things like a screwdriver! It was epic!

think about it... we know these diodes are divergent.. and if you look at the dot hitting buildings, it's HUGE by the time it gets there.

Thanks bobhaha, I seem to remember seeing that and couldn't attach what I know of Pontiac to these videos, (Not least that I'm pretty certain he doesn't live near the Danube!)

I'm sorry, but having a, 'think about', it is not enough. Seeing a huge dot on a building gives not facts about output, divergence or potential damage. This behaviour, without the figures and proof, in my opinion, is indefensible.

On that basis it's okay, then, to go shining my 1W pointer around the city as long as I de-focus it a bit?

It'd take a lot more divergence than is shown there to make 20W eye safe within a few miles.

Dude that first video is 100% stupid! Pause it at around 1 min and 1 second, you can clearly see it reflect off something and shoot off right next to their heads and THEIR NOT WEARING SAFETY GLASSES!! Also sorry to burst your bubble, but at that power the divergence is not going to save your eyes, for another 2-5km's. I estimate that at around 10W maybe more...

Unm, now, all that what you need, is a decent "triplet" beam expander, for collimate it in an 1mm beam diameter ..... (just kidding :p :D)

Yeah, I didn't turn my loose on the public, I had it on a workbench burning stuff in my garage. And talk about divergent, the beam on my setup expands about a foot for every foot it travels. The only "public" I have around where I live is a crapload of corn anyway :D

I think I'll go try to make popcorn from 100 yards or so :eg:

LOL
dude, are you aware of the fact that radiation/area^2 goes down proportionally to the SQUARE of the distance? At the dot sizes I was seeing in the video, the amount of light at any given point was probably less than a 5mW laser. I mean, come on, it's basically like shining a focused 20 watt LED. Just because it's a laser doesn't mean that it is automatically dangerous...

That's true. But that's a danger to themselves, not the public. And 10 watts of blue light is next to nothing over that much area. At 2-5kms that light would hardly even be visible.
