How tough are diodes?

Just wondering. I might have possibly dropped mine about 2 ft or 3 on to wood, bare diode in static bag. Think I killed it or damaged it? still waiting on a host so no way to test it.

Harmless woops or should I start the tears? The loud clack it made (heavy brass) made me stroke. NOOOOOOOOOOOO! curse my clumsiness!

Im sure it survived, the bag may have weighed more that the diode and took most of the shock.

Tiny thin bag and sounded like a rock hitting (landed on the brass ring). I hope you are right though.

It's a solid state device without mechanical parts. It'll be fine:)

Like everyone else said, its fine. The plastic bag lowered the terminal velocity and absorbed a lot of the impact. I would be more worried about static.

Not recommended but...
My diode did not fit into my Axixz housing, so I put it against a few pounds of metal and
used a punch(metal spike to dent metal for starting holes) to expand the metal of the diode against the Axixz module. It survived, so I think your fine.

I've dropped diodes from 3 feet onto concrete before and they have survived, except the LOC one. The LOCs are pretty sensitive when it comes to handling because everything is exposed.

Yikes, if it can survive having a punch used on it I should probably be good unless there was a faulty weak bond in it somewhere to begin with. I guess I was just thinking of them being super fragile in terms of current, static, etc... and generalized that to physical fragility too.

Off topic a bit but I handle electronics all the time, computer parts all over my house, under my bed, in drawers etc... Only use static precautions on other peoples stuff I'm fixing or my new expensive "baby" of the moment. Never had anything die of static. Maybe its the high humidity? Diode is my baby of the moment though so going to be cautious.

Must have been more gental. I was pissed one day and I couldnt get a diode in, so i used a tube around the diode, hit it very hard with a hammer many times because it didnt go in, and finally got it in, but it was dead =D

My fav. way to put a diode in: From a bit kit, I take a size ~6 security hex bit (holes in middle). The diode leads fit right in the hole, then I press it with a vice. I get nice even pressure all around the diode, and it gets pressed in there night and tight.

With mine, the end is beveled a little, so there's a round ring in the inner diameter pressing the diode, never making contact with the AIXIZ module
