I was messing with electrical tape burning and noticed it made a cool reflection...Video speaks for its self (2 videos in one) This is a Rayfoss 200mw laser pointer beaming at electrical tape from 2ft. As it burns the tape and gets deeper, the reflections change. Was a fun experiment, it did smoke :P

Some notes:

In reality its cooler. There's just tins of very thin green/black lines that are in constant motion.
In the end of the video you see me with no glasses..Oh no! The reflection to the wall is darker than my 5mw laser. My camera just shows it being really way-over bright. Note why I always look at the wall so if i move the laser it cant possibly reflect at me in the eyes...I planned this out before doing this experiment.

Very nice... I've always liked that effect, but I've never gotten the chance to properly look at it.

A well-known but great effect. I remember the first time I ever saw this after getting my first high-powered laser (DL Viper 95)... ah the memories :rolleyes:

Hey Arayan, if you didn't already know about this, then I'm sure you'll be surprised to find that a lot of various items one would typically find around the house can create similar, if not better, light show effects.

That is a very easy way to get hit in the eyes, or some one else's eyes while your at it. The risk of damage is at your discretion, however make sure that no one is around when you are doing it, and if so, they must wear laser glasses. Hurting your self is one thing, hurting someone else is a completely different story.

Yea, and remember if the electrical tape you're using just so happens to be shiny or fairly reflective, it could easily do accidental damage to you and/or surrounding persons' vision. Especially true if you just so happened to be a part of the Arctic craze, or plan on getting your hands on a high-powered 445nm build...

This would be even more fun if you add in a red laser or a violet one and burnt the tape with multiple colors. Make for a trippy light show.
 
So describe how you do this?

You just point a laser at the tape and when it burns a hole it looks like this as it shines throught the hole?

DO NOT attempt it with your arctic, this is exactly what I was talking about, you will cause permanent eye damage!!!

It works by reflecting the light onto a nearby wall, as it burns the reflection makes neat shapes. I did this with a 445nm diode the other day, but you NEED saftey glasses and a camera to observe this, again DO NOT use your arctic to do this....
 
I'd agree not to ever try this with the arctic. I had this pointing towards me (the laser) so the 'show' was opposite of me. Even though it renders no possible way to hit me back, the arctic is going to be too risky and still remain bright. I was showing this on a wall that was ~10ft away, and i had times where it would spread over 15ft wide on my wall...So id recommend a room alone with only you in it...if you do it with a lower power laser...

I'm totally agree a diffuse reflection could be very dangerous because unpredictable. Then you can have nice effects also with a 5 mW laser :)
