I recentley got a diode out of my HD DVD player. It has 4 prongs and when i looked inside of the diode there was no lense. How can i test the diode to see if it works before i order all of the stuff i need to make the laser pointer?
P.S. There was a lense in the housing from which i extracted the diode. I pulled out the housing with which the lense was in. Should i hot glue it on the diode?

What kind of HD DVD did it come out of is the first question that needs to be answered. this will probably help in finding the pin out of the diode

second: the lens is not a problem you can get better control of the light output with a AixiZ module than the optics that came with it. This will let you control the beam divergence.

Clear photos of what you have there will help a great deal. Sleds, diode, lens, essentially everything. We will find it hard to almost impossible to help without these I'm afraid. There is currently a similar question regarding an unknown diode with 4 pins. It's a bit like saying, "I have this car here. It's green with four wheels... "

Lenses are normally seperate from the diode anyway. We use a specially design module to place a lens in front of our diodes. Do a search for, "Aixiz module", using the search button to familiarise yourself with the kit.

After a bit of reading too, (stickies etc), go introduce yourself. There is a, "Welcome", thread.

That is just a regular 5mW red diode. Not worth messing with.

You should look for a LOC diode, they are cheap and pretty decent little diodes.

by the sounds of it this may be the correct pin out but I don't believe anyone has tested your model of diode


Most Blu-ray's have the same pinout,I don't see why this should be any different.
There is a way to test polarity though.
You send low ma through the diode... like 10 ma at 3v and test the output.
when you find that one pinout let through the most ma that may be your correct + and -.
But with four pins you probably have a red and IR mixed in there.
To see the Infrared light you may need to use a camera phone or a cheap digital camera to see the output.
You may want to do a search to further elaborate on what I have suggested, this was very short

all in all I would try the pinout above with around 40ma to drive it. to be safe.

As Pontiac says, not worth spending any money on this diode but it is worth spending time to understand it. The pin configuration may be the same as Cheech's post, and it may not but discovering which pin is what is a good learning curve and considering it's a free diode then it doesn't matter if you kill it. Just be careful if you hook up the IR, (or NIR), side. It may show as a dull, deep red colour, (don't look at it directly please! Very important!). Use a camera/phone to view it if you hook it up, you'll see a huge difference between how bright it looks for real and how bright it is on the phone. BELIEVE THE PHONE!

I think there should be a correction to the diagram posted above though. The case pin and what is labelled as the photodiode are actually a shared ground in my experience. I.e. there are two ground pins and both work.

Dead right to go for an LOC when the time comes but practice with these free ones is, well, free and you will save yourself cash in the long run. Build or buy yourself a driver and have some safe fun.

There's not a whole lot of difference between 20-30mA and 40mA. As these diodes have not been through any rigourous testing then the limits are not fully understood. IIRC the 20-30mA is what I estimate as the power I had one running at and it seems to have lasted just fine, (this was only powering the Red side of the diode). I'm sure that they will run higher but for that application, and in general, I tend to be quite conservative.

There is also no gaurantee this is the same diode but as Mr Badger says the harvesting, soldering, installation, and powering of this diode builds valuable skills and understanding before sacrificing more costly components.
