I think it's safe to say that these goggles are very different individually. I got very lucky with mine, but others not so much, like Eudaimonium..

I definitely agree with this, tese goggles have proven to be rather inconsistent, especially in their build quality. But I suppose that's what we should expect from $8 goggles from HK.

I wouldn't expect those individual variations - they may be cheap and/or bad quality, but you would expect them to be identical... the come from the same factory line using the same materials etc.

One important note on looking at the dot through glasses:

It depends on what the dot is on. Things like wallpaper can fluoresce under green light, producing yellow, orange or red light in the process. It is -normal- that this light is visible though anti-green glasses. Few people know about this fluorescense though, since you cannot observe it without protective glasses: the green is so much brighter than the little bit of yellow or red, its not noticeable.

When the dot is on a non-fluorescent surface, you should see a very dim green dot, or none at all, depending on laser power and optical density.

Lets say you have a 100 mW laser and OD3 glasses. You would see the equivalent of a 0.1 mW green laser dot. This should still be visible, green in color, but quite dim.

You wouldn't expect them to have individual variations, but that's just what the few tests different members have performed suggest. For example, HIMNL9's test of these same goggles with a similarly-powered violet laser produced much greater reductions than my goggles. (177mW reduced to <1mW and 141mW reduced to ~9mW respectively)

I agree that qualitative tests aren't very reliable for the reasons you mentioned, but even the metered tests aren't consistent, so it's hard to say for sure that these goggles are indeed consistent. In order to really test it someone would have to buy them in bulk at different times, effectively testing different "batches", but even that kind of a test wouldn't be entirely conclusive...

I'm not saying these individual variations arent there, its just surprising to me.

There might be different batches though, perhaps one original good one, and one imitation. The 177 to <1 sounds like legit OD2+ protection... perhaps they found another company for a second batch, but those didn't think about the application and just made 'red sunglasses' that look exactly like the original, but offer no reliable protection.

The only way to know for sure is to have several of the good and the bad glasses side by side. Often there are minor differences in the size, shape, frame, weight, etc that are tell tale in these cases.

My replacement from FP arrived - broken again

It's better than last time, though. Guess anyone ordering glasses from FP shouldn't assume they'll arrive in one piece

I compared them to the other pair - seem exactly the same (somewhat bright green through 1 layer, dim orange through 2 layers, for 30mw). I wouldn't trust these to be OD2...

Sorry to hear about your broken pair. I ordered two different pair and they sent me the exact same pair so I have two of these. If anyone really wants one, I can pack it well and ship it for $10 paypal to US48 residents only, brand new unworn. PM me.

It seems the majority of people who order these goggles are receiving defective pairs...I guess I must've gotten really lucky! three pairs in one envelope and no damage. But I guess that's how it goes when buying cheap Chinese goods, the majority of them lack consistency in quality.

The pieces of my first pair block almost every single photon from bluray laser I had at the moment, there is apsolutely no violet on the other side, only a faint ORANGE dot.

Green wasn't going though at all also, no green on other side what-so-ever.

Blocked the bluray better than my Eagle Pair 5.

And now the replacement lets half of it though.

I do not notice any color differences between the two. Go figure.

Exactly like mine.

Yup, exactly.

I can take a pic if you want. I really do not notice any color gradient, exact shade of red is same in both.
But the pieces do not let any through, replacement are crap...

Hey, maybe you need to smash you goggles to get them to block something :D

Just kidding, don't do that. But don't buy them either.
