FS: Dorcy Junior Flash Lights! and heatsinks?

Have you physically checked to see if they are old style or new style? The model numbers are the same. Basically, is the "head" portion the same as in your picture? Your picture is old style

This will make a difference with which heat sink is needed. Also, is anyone actually making a heat sink for the old style anymore?

I just bought this from Target for $10.38 on clearance. I'm new to this hobby and thought this would make a great little "host" I think is what you call it.

I've searched around the forums and could only find this thread, is there any type of build thread using this flashlight?

Here is a "hack-a-day" for it
I-Hacked.com Taking Advantage Of Technology - Building a High-Power Blu-Ray Laser

Unfortunately, that heat sink is not being made anymore. You will have to come up with another heat sink for it. Also, the "hack" doesn't talk about removing the stock driver from under the black plastic ring with the hole in it. You'll need to get that out as well.

Dave, thank you for the link! It's too bad the heat sinks aren't made anymore. Do you know who / what company made them in the past? Maybe I could find somebody offering one up. I love the size of this little guy and would love to have this as my first home built laser.

Also, what black part are you referring to?

Do you happen to know if i can use a 3.6v in this or do i have to use a 3.0v?
I'm asking because i already have a charger and a surplus of 3.6's.

Dark Horse (He's a member here) used to make that heat sink, but he had to tear down his shop.

Are you talking about the laser "hack" or the stock flashlight? You can use either a 3V or a 3.6V battery in the laser hack with the flexdrive. I don't know if the stock driver for the flashlight will take 3.6V. The flashlight is shipped with a 3V.

Tear down shop? That doesn't sound too good. I'm debating if I should keep it and try to figure something out or just return it and look elsewhere. I'd like to build my first one for on the cheap. I was able to salvage a blu ray diode from a PS3 that had a bad motherboard, just need to get the rest.

IDK -- That might be considered sacrilege here. Nobody actually uses a Dorcy Jr. as a flashlight, do they? :tinfoil:

I have a couple of new styles here. I'll pop a 3.6V into one to see ;)

Stock board runs at 3.6V, at least all the ones I've tried do. @Daguin, yes, some of us do, I kept one of mine "stock" from the GB, and my mum has one as well. (/me waits for crowd with pitchforks).

I'd look around, there may well still be a couple of the old heat-sinks knocking around the forum. You don't by chance still have the rest of the PS3 drive do you? My drive's controller circuit appears to be dead, but my motherboard and sled is fine. I could trade you for a couple of PHR-803Ts if you'd like, would make a good first laser for you.

I do still the rest of it, can you take a picture of the part you're wanting? Don't hate me for asking this, but what are the PHR-803T? :)

The old style will run with either a 3V or a 3.6V. It is a little brighter with the 3.6V in it

The new style appears to have some sort of over voltage protection. I tested two of them. They work fine with a 3V battery. However, with a 3.6V battery there is no light :thinking:

I can take some pictures in a bit - essentially I need the larger PCB, mounted on the underside of the drive, but in case it is not this piece, perhaps the other boards and the drive spindle would also be useful. Do you know which model the sled from your PS3 was? If you need help identifying it, post pictures and I'm sure I or someone else can help identify it.

The PHR-803T is the sled from the XBOX 360 HDDVD drive addon, it is capable of running up to about 150mW of violet light, but if you want it to last longer I wouldn't run it this high. Many people start with PHRs because they are readily available and have a good power-cost ratio, and they are relatively well-known compared with the more expensive drives.


EDIT: My new-style Dorcies both run off rechargeable batteries no problem, perhaps you have a different driver? I'll multimeter it, one second...

Confirmed: 3.8V at 0.74A draw from battery, new-style Dorcy. I suspect your batteries are a slightly different size and so aren't making full contact with the driver board, try putting a blob of solder on the driver to raise the +V pad by around 3mm. I had to do this with mine, I think I mentioned this in a thread before?

Is this the board you're talking about?

I have almost the entire drive left, minus the laser assembly and the rails it was on. The drive spindle is still there and all of the ribon cables are still there. It came out of an 80GB backwards compatible model if I remember correctly.

I used to repair PS3's and XBOX 360's a while back so I still have some parts laying around.
