I know there is a diode of some sort inside of cd players but i really dont want to take it apart and try to replace it in one of my lasers before i know some things about it.

1.What type of diode is it? IR,UV,or red?

2.If the laser is visable such as red,is it bright?

3.the estimated power needed to run it propereley

4.If it has a high enough Nm, and Mw rating to burn things

1. it's IR.

2. no, its either invisible to human eyes or very faint.

3. depends on the CD burner speed, but probably anywhere from 20-200mA.

4. possibly yes, if focused correctly.

I'd have to disagree with you on that. He states that this is a CD player, not a burner so the laser diode would be very weak and only capable of a couple of mW's max.
 
Its probably not worth the effort, apart from fun experimenting. The wavelength is 780 nm, which is a very very faint red.

For a player it would only be a few mW's indeed, but for a fast burner it can be over 200.
 
okay thx,i think ill try a dvd/cd burner or possibly some sort of blue ray diode if i ever come across one for cheap
 
also you don't have to worry about nm for burning. every nm can burn. you just need the right amount of mw(power) and for lower mw's you need a focusable lens
