A Planet, the Milky Way, & a Laser

The only thing that makes me not use it as wallpaper is that illuminated houses in front, the same picture taken in the mountain or so would make it more awesome than what it alredy is :)

Thanks for your honest post dude. However the scene has no houses in front, just the entrace to a gated community.

Now that I know what you would like to have, I will try to produce that image for you.

Really nice pictures! That second one looks like it was taken with a high quality instrument such as a Schmidt camera or something...

You can tell from the pin point images all the way to the edge of the field...

This is probably a really dumb question... but are you able to make out the milky way with your eyes? or do you need the help of a ~20-30 sec exposure to see it? Also love that second picture sooooo much!!

I've never seen it look as detailed as it is in that picture but you can definitely see it on a clear night in an area free of lights. It's the long cluster of stars in the sky.

Not a dumb question, the Milky Way can be seen visually and to my eye it looks just like it does in the photo minus the color. You just need to get away from the city lights to see it well. Thanks for your comments.
 
I saw that image and it inspired me to go out and try to capture some stars with my 18-105mm 3,5-5,6 lens and I couldn't get the moon right...too much light (played with settings so much the battery ran out :p) and too many reflections....how do you manage to get it right? Also, no milky way visible here, only some stars....I guess I have to go to a far field where no urban smog makes the sky violet at night :p

EDIT: Also, what tripod are you using to hold the RPL? If anybody knows a good combination of tripod+holder I can get at DX please let me know :)

Were I go camping in the mountains is super dark but the Milky Way is very small. About 20 inches from my perspective. If I had the view you do I would sit there all night.
 
What are those 4 red lights in the right side of the picture? The leaning radio tower of Pisa maybe? I only noticed them after I put this picture as my desktop. Thanks.
 
Do you ever align the axes to particular stars and flash them a message? In case some guy with a 532nm sensitive telescope, distant in time and space, happens to be hanging around?
