Voltage drop of SLD3236VF 405nm laser diode

Hi everyone,

I am on my first custom built laser project and am really struggling to determine the voltage drop of this diode so i can create the correct dummy load to adjust the driver to a safe current output without risking my actual diode.

I have a current dummy setup consisting of a 1ohm resistor and 4x 1N4001 diodes connected in series together but im not sure how accurately that will "simulate" the laser diode i have given the little and mixed information i see online.

Here is the data sheet on this laser diode i have(remove square brackets from url):

The 5 volts is the forward operating voltage of this diode at 140 mA. If you drive it harder it will increase. It could get up to 6 volts at a high enough drive current.

Make sure to not over current this little diode, i've killed one before by driving it way beyond 140mA. It seems like this diode just can't handle higher currents.
However its a relatively cheap diode and it's good for practice.

All the 405nm diodes are temperamental. They all tend to fail early at some over driven drive current, but knowing the safe limit only comes with trial and error and many failures. Good luck.
