Hello, people of LPF. Im interested in learning more about lasers, and want to try to build one myself eventually. I understand the dangers that can come with mishandling one, so Ive gone about getting some O6 goggles before anything. I was looking into modules, and how certain pieces are placed together. Is there a heavy reasoning behind using pure copper? Would other things like aluminum or silver work as well?

Hello Protobyte. Finally a chemistry question. Start with specific heat of material and factor in density. Then you get the maximum heat-sink effect for a given volume. Al and Cu great... have not done the math on Ag, but someone else here at LPF probably knows the answer off hand.

Welcome to the forum.
Depending on what your requirements are..
you can use all those materials. Some are more
thermally conductive than others.

Please don't use the above posting example as
good forum etiquette. It is frowned upon by the
Forum community to double post within a short
time.

It is very easy to add to or edit any of your posts
by using the [EDIT] button at the left bottom of
any of your posts.

Enjoy your stay.:)

Welcome to the LPF. Silver is a great heat sink material. It is very rarely used, however, because of costs.

Welcome to LPF, Protobyte! :)

Have fun, stay safe, and enjoy your stay.

PS - Make sure your OD6 goggles are made in the proper range to protect you from the laser wavelengths that you plan to buy/build.

Yeah, I know. I was in the midst of an edit when the screen flickered and the rest is history.

Thank you guys for all of the welcoming feedback. I am really enjoying learning about lasers, and have plans on sticking around. I have always loved chemistry (nerdy dude), and do not know what Ive been doing without learning about lasers, and they are damn more than interesting. I'll definitely have some questions along the way, but will try to do researching before I propose something that makes no sense to you all. Have a good day, and thanks for reading :).

Welcome! Glad you found this community - it really is a fantastic place to learn and there's a real sense of community between members :) Glad to hear you're staying! If you can edit your OP to add your rough geographic location that would be appreciated by many members (Country is fine, if youre in the US - perhaps country and state for example) as this helps members tailor their advice based on local laws etc.

THIS^^^ AND all others are helpful posts.
PLZ heed the mention of double posting as well as necro=posts and multiple threads on same topic..

--even if in a new section or same.
exception is when a new member did not provide at the very least a general location as BTG posted.
If you cannot edit your intro title it is fine to just make another thread-- but only intros.
If you make a new but same thread in another (correct)
section it is your job to request that one thread needs to be gone and any mod can help with this.

NEVER post in any thread w/o being sure it s not a necro.

this can mean checking dates on a few of the newest posts.

NOT just the last post (it could be a necro )
Exception to the double posts are in your BS&T thread (bumping)
OR if something new and important needs to be posted...but not by using edit-- make a new post so we all will see
it.
feel free to PM any Vet with questions.

I will save my welcome greeting until I see your edited version w/ location--hope you are also in Texas-- we have
plans in progress for a Laser Meet soon--last TEXLEM (San Antonio 2012) was awesome-- go once and you will never pass up any LEMs
JUST being around a bunch of people and lasers W/O
Anyone asking:
' why lasers?'
'why do you have more than one?'
'I don't understand... why so many colors?'

It is so refreshing!!!

IF you can make SELEM (13) (in Newton N.C.)
around mid aug.. ---GO!! its now 5 days long and the most common comments are:
'I (also) wish now that it was longer'
'it was a life changing experience'
'THANKS to all who urged me to attend. I will go to any more LEMs that I can'

.. you might even want to host a LEM... I did only a few months after my first SELEM.

Len in TX
