I am here because of yellow lasers...

But taking a few steps back, I'm from Miami....., Actually most of my life I lived in and around Texas, then spent 2 years in Indiana, and now been here for many years.

While I started in emergency services (fire fighter/EMT), after too many years of school, I've been in environmental health and safety for the last 15 years or so. Most of it has been focused on radiation safety, but mostly ionizing radiation safety but thats changing with my current assignment. Although lately it seems most of our injuries and issues are people walking and staring at their phones and running into doors, falling down in the parking lot, etc.

Anyhow, outside of that enjoy motorcycles, music, etc. Have dabbled in computer programming, etc.

But back on lasers, my move to Florida brings me to one of our sites that we manufacture instruments with a fun array of lasers. While I won't go into the full details of the instruments, basically a wide array of medical diagnostic devices. One of them is a neat platform that takes 4 to 6 lasers ranging from near-IR to near-UV. But one of the lasers it doesnt have is yellow... while it mixes a pretty yellow, I still am always amazed by the vibrancy of the colors straight from a laser than the mixing of colors. So that actually led to a search that led to here, etc..

But I've always been fascinated with lasers. I remember having them a long time ago. I think I first saw a helium-neon laser .... decades ago? ... and I remember playing with a solid state one when I went through industrial engineering classes in highschool (do they even have such dangerous classes today? metal shop, wood shop, etc?). Most of the ones I had back then (and now) are cheapie no-name not-worth anything but a fun cat toy...

But I think that changed in the mid 2000s. I can't remember now what sparked an interest in non-red lasers, but I know that at some point I wanted to get a green one, and looking back at my emails, looks I acquired my NOVA laser in 2007. Specially NOVA Lasers X45 Compact NH01XS045 ... which it seems reading the forms is actually a CNI laser (basically same as Dragon Lasers's Viper Green Laser). Now the email doesn't specify what power level that the pointer was supposed to be, but somehow in my mind, I remember purchasing at 15mW laser. Looking at the part number now and knowing I've since measured the output at 47mW, somehow I think it probably was supposed to be a 45 mW? Not sure if that was available, I know today Dragon if 15, 35, or 55 in that body. I still have the very nice aluminum case for it.

One thing I really would love to do is build a laser scanner/projector (like at concerts, etc) using 3 lasers and a pair of galvos... but time and money right?

589 Yellow - 5 mW CNI - Dragon Lasers - On Order(shipped)
532 Green - 45 mW CNI - Nova Lasers
450 Blue - 30 mW CNI - Dragon Lasers - On Order(shipped)

Seems we have cancelled our migrations out. ^_^ Born and raised around the Houston area... Cypress-Fairbanks for part, Webster for the other (well and some Waco, but obviously not houston that part... ).

Thanks, part of the reason for joining was to add to the thread on shipping times and etc for the vendors. I like seeing that kind of information shared, helps weed the low quality from the high quality... I mean I can't afford the lasers we have at work, but anyhow.

Sadly your signature linked out to a build of a Cyan (Blue/Green 495mm) laser.... ah man extremely pretty.... seems there are a lot of dangerous paths to go down that have nothing to do with the shooting laser beams in the eyes... more about the laser beams to the pocket........

Definitely found some great stuff so far.... honestly didn't think I'd find anything for my professional work (a whole long threat on LSO)... but seems that is here too. But as for the hobby side, I think I haven't even begun to find all the fun yet... I just am addicted to the look the beams.

Welcome brotha! Awesome intro!!! You're going to love your 589nm GLP from dragon lasers 😁 I just received mine about a week ago and I can't put it down! Hands down favorite pointer my fingers have touched lolol turn the lights down & enjoy that needle thin beam 😎 add a lil fog/smoke & admire the pillar of yellow light emitted from the aperture. Distance is crazy good too. Omg I have to stop 🤣 again, welcome!!!
