That wasn't a single day, but three days, Len. I didn't know you went. I wanted to go, but was too far from upstate New York to attend. I did see the movie with my girlfriend at the time at a drive in. She was kind of miffed at me because I was more interested in the show than her. I'd been a musician all of my life, so I was very interested. I had to go back to watch it again as she didn't let me watch it in its entirety. :crackup:

Edit: Jimi Hendrix was paid $90,000 to play at Woodstock. The Who were paid $14,000 to play.

the 107.5 FM DJ just said he got 18K & was highest paid-(also myb highest highest) - you need to remember there were all kinds of payments etc. movie rights.. $$ for interviews.. It would be interesting to see ALL the footage taken there..
The 'Woodstock' high was shortlived- TY Charlie and the Hell Angles... for royally screwing everything up.

He was the highest paid by a lot. According to the promoter for the Woodstock Festival, he was paid $90,000 to play the last day. By then, most of the crowd had headed home and there were few people left by comparison. Your DJ needs to do better research as I recall the Who were paid $14,000 and insisted on cash or a cashiers check before they would perform. They had one helicopter at the festival grounds and it was the weekend and the banks were all closed. They called a local banker at home and flew to the bank to get the Who a cashiers check and flew back to the festival. By doing so, the Who did perform at the concert. There is a Woodstock Festival historical video documenting all of this that came out ~30 years ago.

I don't know where I was on this actual day in 69, but was probably trying to cram in all the last of the summer fun that I could before I started the 8th grade. :yh:

Unfortunately I was a bit too young to attend Woodstock, it would have been something to remember for a lifetime though! :cool:

You must be referring to Rolling Stone's free concert at the Altamont Speedway, where the Hell's Angels were paid in all the beer they could drink to provide security for that concert. One of them knifed and killed a black man at that concert. Whoever thought having the Hell's Angels drunk to provide security must have been the biggest idiot of all time. That concert devolved into nothing but a massive fist and knife fight.

Wow! HakZaw1! I was only 11 and likely out playing somewhere in the forest. I do notice that the bulk of my favorite music from that era centers on 68 and 69.

YES that is true ,Paul. I was there the weekend before stayed all day Sat. --watched the stage builders moving fast to get a stage set-- the location had been changed and they really had little time to be ready. The Hog Farm people and their flower bus were already there (drove from Cali) and cooking food. That was when I met 'Wavy Gravy' what a character.. We left the city iirc late Thursday in a bare bones rented van- food and wine for many days. had already made plans to go with a few local friends I had met-- had our trickets- chipped on a tiny tent --but I got an offer I could not refuse-- my bosses good friend Hilda wanted a photog to go with her and she had been 'hired' suddenly by the biggest newspaper in Rio.


..and I got the 'job' (but never got paid)so my friends were camped a long way away. & I was holding an all access 'performers pass'- I could go on stage--and out back where the talent had their winnabagos etc. Hilda hooked up with her friends (w/ Richie Havens) so I had the 'van' to myself! & parked 'back stage'.

4 gallons of good wine- lots to share!! ( or trade!!)

I have a lot of good concert memories, but I don't have that one. Wish I did.

I SHOULDA stayed 'more sober' and done a better job w/ my Cameras.
I shoulda stayed until late Sunday- my boss would have not known .. it was a 6 credit internship of 10 weeks and I got hooked up with Milton Greene a Life/times photog who used me as assistant in the studio did the darkroom stuff and on shoots with one of his photogs. (ted hardin?)-- it was a great time to be in 'the city'.. saw the man on the moon live at Circus Circus.. on a 12 ft (iirc) screen which at the time was a big deal..

I had a 65 VW beetle--IN THE CITY

nobody has a car in NYC..pita to park--mine got towed 3 times.. but it made me VERY popular- Jones beach on weekends- tripped to 'Up State' the north woods on weekends Big Bear? some of my new friends had never really been out of NYC --when a deer ran in front of my car they freaked- when we eventually stopped and got our night vision they freaked again at the STARS-never seen that many -

- smog made for bad starwatching etc and/or too poor to get outta dodge.

I also went to so many NYC music concerts in '69 that I cannot tell you about some..
Best was (after Woodstock) The Doors at... the Filmore East...
I shot every concert at Kent State from 65 to 1970. truly blessed.. & no regrets!! & came close to getting shot by the Nat. Guard'

always been a 'burnout' rather than a 'fade away'--j/k

Hi Hak,
Well I was only 10 yrs old at the time so there wasn't to much meaning behind it for me. It was just cool cinematography at the time, and in 1969 who would have though of the year 2001. It was like watching James Bond or the Avengers when they had a telephone in the car basically unheard-of at the time. Now here we are in 2018 who would have though this far ahead at the time?

I personally have never been to a concert in my entire life!
Been to the opera, symphony and broadway plays a bunch.
When I was in NYC we'd go to the Minskoff theater.
Thats the closest I've come to a concert.

(Scares the willies out of me - guess i'm a bit of a whimp, especially with large crowds of people - heard too many horror stories.)

Different world :)

Not better or worse, just different.
