I have some raccoon issues, and was wondering what people thought of using a laser as a raccoon deterrent? I was imagining something that was hot enough to make them uncomfortable but won't kill or seriously harm them. Fire risk shouldn't be an issue (wet yard).

Why dont you just use a flamethrower while you're at it and get rid of them for good?

Just keep your garbage inaccessible and they'll learn there's nothing for them there. Shining a bright light at them won't do sh*t. They're pretty clever.

I had a coon get into my chicken coop and killed one of my hens. So I reenforced the run with heavy steel fencing. and I prayed a good deal of repellent . As for garbage cans tie the lids down tight , they are nocturnal animals .

As has already been stated, this is a BAD idea. Lasers are not the cool new tool to take care of all of life's nuisances.

That'd be enough power to make them permanently blind. Not a good idea.
Plus, I imagine they'd behave like cats and start chasing the beam anyway.

No, this is a serious question. It's not a food issue; they've been using parts of my yard as a latrine. It's gotten to the point where I can't let my dogs out without the risk of a serious confrontation. I'd like to deter them humanely, and I've researched lots of options and have tried a variety of them with limited success. I did do a search here before I posted and only found one related set of posts, and it seemed to be about a guy on a bicycle. I'm not a troll or a kid, just a guy with a problem trying to think of out-of-the-box options.

Would bear spray work? Or is that too cruel?
I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. Lasers are unlikely to be useful. Do you know why they come into your yard?
As has been mentioned already, both a bad and not too bright/stupid daydream driven idea.
Google the subject assuming you are not the first person on earth to have racoon problems that need to be solved, there are many responsible ways to handle the situation.

We have a rock formation in our yard with lots of nooks and crannies, and the raccoons have established a latrine there; it's definitely full of raccoon poop. I've tried cleaning it out (and I've tried covering it with diluted hot sauce and other repellants) but they keep coming back. Lights don't scare them away at this point, and human presence will get them to withdraw, but only for a few minutes.
I have a squirt gun full of diluted hot sauce that definitely scares them away (but they come back). Bear spray is a good idea, I will research that. Most of the people I have read about who have had semi-permanent success creating a negative enough experience for the racoon that the racoon doesn't come back (painball guns, air guns, things like that). I was hoping there was another way to induce a painful sensation in a racoon without the risk of grave shock-induced injury.

I guess I don't understand that reaction -- the capsaicin in hot sauce is well known to be a raccoon repellent, and a very common suggestion is to dilute hot sauce and spray it around raccoon areas; by putting it in a squirt gun I simply have something with a longer range. Someone above suggested bear spray -- after some googling I see that bear spray is basically pepper spray with capsaicin as its active ingredient and so diluted hot sauce in a squirt gun is essentially a weaker version of that approach. I guess it might sound childish or silly but it's a practical approach to a real problem -- my only issue is that is drives them away but does not deter them over time.
