this is how you prevent google from doing that, click on your google icon top right corner, click "My Account" icon, then in the "Personal info & privacy" section click on "Manage your Google activity", then click "GO TO ACTIVITY CONTROLS", then pause everything you see, Now you are no longer watched by google!

What ArcticDude said. Google most certainly is not the only one doing this. :(

Yes, after I found out that our LG television was "calling home" it hasnt been connected to internet ever since. It leaked all channels we were watching and all USB media folder content was sent to LG. :tsk:

Yep. It's unfortunate, but that's the side effect of having free internet services. Even turning off a lot of tracking features on your accounts really don't help if you want to avoid it.

The only real way to prevent datamining is to completely leave the internet. VPNs and proxies really won't do to much if you need to use accounts.

Even LPF uses Google's ad platform to bring in revenue, and I'm sure it can read most if not all of everything you do on the forum.

Ultimately, it's just an inescapable fact of the modern world. Facebook and Google are most criticized, but pretty much anything you need an account for will do this. Some people think Apple protects them, but they just don't use the data themselves. Even most email services will skim your emails to find advertisement interests, and Windows 10 is just like the mobile operating systems in that it can collect data like that.

Depends a bit on how you look at this technology: Getting course location for a device based on what wifi networks are in range, and what cell towers are servicing it could b regarded as 'sneaky', but it's also a power efficient way to go about things if you don't need -very- accurate location, just hundreds of meters or kilometer resolution (say, to get a weather forecast).

Long before smartphones this was already used: Back in the 90s some providers had lower rates for calling nearby landlines. In our system cellphones do not have area codes: all cell numbers begin with 06, while landlines begin with 01 to 05 and 07, giving some indication of where they are (something like 0302xx would indicate the city i'm in, 03xx would be roughly the province).

Back in the 90s they aready used cell tower based location to dgtermine if a call would be cheaper or more expensive, and at that time the only source of location was which tower(s) you were connected to.

It's to be expected at this point, and companies to their best to try to keep some of their marketing strategies out of peeking eyes I would assume. Selling browsing history to advertisers is big business!

I remember speaking about this particular problem before, and my solution has been AdBlock. It's free, and it blocks just about all ads which do nothing but make my online browsing more of a PITA. :(

I have some info from my phone recorded, but I turned off most of functions to record tracking. The nice thing is I found some sites that I forgot about in my history.

You have the option of turning off Google's tracking functionality.

Does the Iphone have the option to dissable tracking you like Android does ?

I don't use an Iphone but it's been known for years the Iphone tracks you. Even when powered off.

There is also a rule of thumb with free apps too. If an app is free to download and it is obvious it took a lot of time and effort to produce, then you need to think of where that developer is making their money. If the app doesn't include ads, then it is most likely gathering information about you and selling it on. This also goes for any app however. Greedy developers could also be doing this with ad laden apps and paid apps as well. Information is money these days. :tsk:

BTW, all smartphones have tracking capabilities. And all phones smart or not can be traced. Remember, police was doing this long before smartphones came into existence. They just made it easier and more accurate now. :tsk:

Unless you take the battery out they can silently ping your phone, it will NOT light up or alert you at all, you see it on police documentaries where they are looking for a suspect and then suddenly they know which end of a casino he is in and by which doors.

Seriously.

They do need a cell phone warrant but they brag about how easy they are to get, your conversation in a car can be listened in on through your phone and it will not alert you at all.

I don't know if they have internal back up batteries yet, but older phones are hackable as long as the main battery is in, even if turned off.

you can't ping a phone that's not connected to wifi / cell / computer. none of these things can happen if a phone is turned off.

Gotta agree with Swami on that. It's only in the movies.

Your phone does most of the pinging anyway, and it can only be pinged back if you've got it on and connected via some network.

Granted, a lot of phones don't have removable batteries, so it's possible that a skilled malicious party could modify its software to make it look like it's off and/or disconnected when it really isn't.
