Hi guys, I'm a 38 y/o and new to lasers. Located in the police state of Australia, so not sure what I'm stepping into. Kind of feels like a landmine, but hey, what can you do?

The last experience I've had was a decade ago playing with a laser pointer in an ink pen and driving my cat crazy, so nothing like the powerful handhelds you get these days. Hoping for some pointers (no pun intended) to getting my toes wet. I know good goggles for the appropriate frequency is a must for anything >5mW really.

I'll let you in on some newbyness. WL pulled my interest, and some of their products still do, like the LaserSaber and Phosforce, but obviously after reading some I'm aware there are better companies to deal with like JetLasers, LaserGlow and Optotronics to name a few, not to mention the custom builders on this forum.

So, point an Aussie in the right direction please? What should I know when ordering a pre-built or do I build from parts? I've done a bit of soldering before, but would need advice if that's the way I go.

At the moment, I'm primarily interested in green and blue lasers like what WL makes in their S3 series.

Welcome. You will have to go for something different than WL, AFAIK they do not deliver to Australia. But their Evo is awesome IMO. :)

Welcome to the forum, it's a great place to learn there's a world of information here. Enjoy and be safe.

As far as which company to buy from the ones you mentioned are good. ( add Sanwu which happens to be my favorite. ) But all depends on the style you like, and wave lengths your going for. The lens you get on the unit will make a difference, g2, for burning, 3 element for better beam divergence. ( their are more lens but those seem to be the main ones) As far as custom builds goes theirs some real good builders here on the forum, one I believe live in Australia .

As far as building your own it's the way to go and it's funner than all get out.

Again welcome and be safe and enjoy. :)

Thanks for all the welcomes so far guys!

Funny thing, straight after registration I saw an ad for them on the forum and clicked. Liked what I saw and sent them an enquiry about their Spiker series.

Ck out their beam expander and adapter ( so you can use on other lasers in the future ) well worth the money .

Welcome to LPF malJohann!
We have quite a few knowledgable members from down under; I'm sure they'll help you out with all the do's and don'ts regarding getting lasers to Australia.
All those companies that you mentioned are a good place to start looking, just be sure to see if they still guarantee shipment to Australia.

Have fun, be safe, and enjoy your stay! :yh:

Welcome Mate, which state are you in?
If you are careful and don't do anything stupid (like take your pointers out of the house or point them at aircraft) then you will be fine. Don't forget safety, goggles etc. Also don't discount non-handheld lasers which are perfectly legal in all states.

Having said all that, you are far better buying diodes and drivers, or whole modules rather than trying to bring a complete pointer into the country. You can even scrounge some decent diodes from DVD burners or the modules out of them. Have a read of the FAQ's and beginners forums to get a feel for whats out there and what you are capable of.

Good luck!

Cheers,
Andrew

VIC. Already squared away that they have to come in piecemeal. I'm also about to join an astronomy club, so I can legally own and point them at the stars.
