Just got my Laser! (And have questions...)

So, this is my first "high powered" laser besides the little keychain ones that are only good for pointing and entertaining cats....

I got the Rayfoss FLX 200mW 532nm.

Right now I have the battery on the charger, and I'm anxiously waiting for that little red light to turn green... (I assume it turns green when it's fully charged. The light was green when I put the battery in, but when I plugged it up, the light turned red; my assumption is a partial charge)

A couple of things though...

I have read some threads about Rayfoss lasers coming with a <5mW safety label on it and the correct label sticker is under the padding in the box. Mine has no sticker on it, and no sticker in the box either.

I was a numpty and didn't pay attention when I took the battery out of the laser after it arrived. I think it was negative towards the rear. Does anyone know for sure with these lasers? I don't want to toast it.

Faona was nice enough to throw in some safety glasses and a hard-shell case (I know they're cheap-o's), but they're green... I don't see these glasses offered on her site anywhere.

I'm not sure they would offer any protection from the 532nm wavelength. These might offer some IR protection, but not any 532nm protection, correct?

I plan on ordering these when I get some more money. Until then, it's only RESPONSIBLE outdoor night-time fun to admire the beam.

That is unless you think these offer enough protection to look at the dot long enough to light a match... I have a black cloth set up to ensure no reflections...

Make sure you put the battery in the correct way. Don't guess.

There are several safety glasses like that, that look exactly the same but are different. Some are good for green, some only violet and blue, and some for violet and blue and IR. Just put them on and turn on your laser and see how much green 532nm they block. At 200mW I expect they will be more than enough for viewing the dot up close or burning, but I wouldn't trust them to protect you from a direct hit to the eye, so be careful of glass and mirrors etc.

Basically if the beam/dot looks the same with them on they are either blocking IR or doing nothing for that wavelength. Would be pretty stupid to send glasses that don't work with the laser you bought. Haven't a clue of the quality of Rayfoss other than I remember someone saying it was a hit or miss thing.

About the battery, 532nm are DPSS so they use an IR pump diode, and all of those are case positive, so nearly all 532nm would be positive to the tailcap. It would be quite an anomaly to design one different because it would require the diode/module to be isolated from the host if it were negative to the tailcap. Also since it is DPSS it will break more easily so don't drop it. It will also be temperature sensitive.

You're right! Positive to the tail cap.

The glasses don't do a darn thing... My laser fits in the hard-case they came in, so at least I have a laser travel case.

But holy effing ess this thing is bright...

532nm sure is bright. That is crazy that the safety glasses are not correct for that laser. Contact them and see if they can send you the correct ones.

Well, I didn't pay for them...

I'm really only planning on using it at night outside anyway. I didn't purchase it to burn things. Although, I'm sure I'll be tempted to at some point...

When I get glasses they'll be the Eagle Pair 190-540nm & 900-1700nm (my greenie doesn't have an IR filter.)

Eagle pair are good but keep in mind that 532nm put out some 808nm and 1064 nm IR but it wouldn't be much with a 200mw so those glasses should be ok.

If you use that outside at night be sure not to attract too much attention to your location. I see you are in the US so don't even think about using that within 10 miles of any airport. Have fun and be careful.

Yeah, I know. Unfortunately I live 8.3 nautical miles from the airport... My wife's parents have a lake house and a bunch of land out in the country. We go out there to shoot my rifle (I don't hunt, I just like shooting high caliber rifles at really long distances). If I can get away with shooting all day, I doubt I'd catch any flak from a laser. Hell, the local police probably have never seen anything like it, so they'd want a go!

Sorry if this is a little off topic, but what part of Alabama are you from CBStrict? I know of 3 active members in Alabama atm (myself included).

I'm in Vestavia Hills (about a 10 minute drive south of downtown Birmingham).

What about you?

I know that you did not pay for them but I was going on the safety aspect. What if you were a customer that did not know about different goggles for different wave lengths?
Say you etched some wood now, you could harm your eyes. I know it would be really bright but there are people out there that would just muscle through and hurt their eyes :(
BTW, what are the calibers you use? Mine are strictly for hunting so I have 30-06, 7x57, 270 and two .22 mags :)

I have a Weatherby Vanguard Series-II stainless chambered in .308 and my carry is a Springfield XDS .45.

I can vouch for the Weatherby's Sub-MOA guarantee!
