These large jpegs make it very hard to read threads on tablets. A size limit would be great.

I frequently notice this too while using an iPad. I believe there is a limit of 800x600 so that it fits on everyone's screen, but most people link their images from some image hosting service such as Photobucket or some similar site, so it's going to display in a thread as whatever size it is. Many people aren't bothering to resize their images. Maybe the moderators could do more to encourage people to resize their images.

Hey Jeff and Pi,
If you go down to "Go Advanced" next to Post Quick Reply, then scroll down and click on "manage attachments", it will show the recommended size for jpg's is 800x600 pixels as Pi R stated. It also shows recommended sizes for other file types. That is why I have always posted at that size. I wish I could post some of my pics larger as they look much better larger, but never have.

Some forums have a feature that automatically resizes large pictures down. I don't think that's an option available here though.

One thing you could do sometimes is in addition to the 800x600 images you could also post links to the full size images so people can view them if they want to.

That's right and if it's linked in to a post from somewhere else on the net like an image hosting site then it will show as whatever size it is. I use Photobucket for all the images I post, it has a built in editor and is easy to resize your photos so I would recommend that, they give you enough space for free and you can buy more if you want.

For those who don't use a tablet yet and don't know what the issue is here I will explain. On your laptop or windows computer a thread will display normally and you get to the huge photo, you then slide your screen back and forth to view the whole thing. Well some tablets now have higher resolution than your computer screen and photos look better and have more detail than when viewed on your computer screen, so those huge photos can be viewed all on screen without having to slide the screen back and forth. The problem is that you get the opposite problem you get on the windows computer. When I view a thread with one or more huge photos those photos show perfectly all on screen while the rest of the thread shrinks to a tiny size!

More and more people will be using tablets instead of laptops and plenty of people can't read fine print and may also not have their computer screens set to the highest resolution, so everyone please keep this in mind when posting photos.

Also worth adding that more and more people browse from their phones... While I don't see myself using a tablet aside from traveling, I do use my phone for short visits online all the time.

As of late I prefer Imgur.com for hosting.

Would help also if everyone avoided oversized pics in their sigs. I've seen even a few vets that have that. I mean they're nice pics and all but do we really need to see it on every post?

Lol! I See what you mean although i dont mind big sig pics But the looping gifs
(i think they are called) drive me NUTS! Im like a moth to a candle I cant stop watching them over and over aNd over! The green laser zapper thing needs to go, lol!
Just in good humor not to make anyone take offense but that sig giff with the guy with a floppy pancake thing that says"Just deal with it". WTF does that even mean! Does that make sense to anyone or am I missing the point? That's my all time nemesis giff for sure.:banghead:

Large pictures in signatures are annoying. My approach to deal with them has been to use a popular add on, and simply permanently block the element... whether large picture, annoying gif, or flashy avatar. Problem solved :)

Of course that doesn't work on the phone :(
 
You're right nw, those pics are fine on my phone, and huge on my tablet. For some reason, it seems to be just tablets that are affected.

:crackup: I'll try to make a new sig gif more often :p I added a little ufo to my avatar :D I think I know what you're talking about that has that sig... can't remember the nick now

That's that bi ***ual Asian kid "KRNAZNBOY" Laser Pointer Forums - Discuss Laser Pointers - View Profile: KRNAZNBOY he hasn't been on much lately and not in more than a month now. In his sig it says: "IF YOUR OFFENDED BY ANYTHING I SAY" followed by that spinning gif with the guy with the pancake that says "DEAL WITH IT". It makes me dizzy to look at it.

See, this is just part of the war on screen real estate. Why fit more information into a screen when you can just bloat what you already have to fill it in? It shouldn't even matter that people are viewing on smartphones. Many smartphones have resolutions that are equal to, or close to, the resolutions of full-size monitors!

It's so idiotic seeing some 18MP photo of essentially sensor noise, focused on some object in the background, taken by a cell phone camera with a lens the size of the @ on my keyboard, oriented in a vertical direction. That's going to earn you an instant neg-rep.

No forum image should really be any larger than about 800px wide. If you can't cram enough detail into that size, use another picture and highlight/crop to the area you're interested in.
