Re: DL 50mw 589nm Review (finally) (Power Test Up)

Well, do you think i could still go by "its just feels warm" or will it generally be bad to keep it on longer?

Ill probably never run it for longer than a few minutes max, just wondering how long it could be run.

I just read in a post from an older DL 589nm review that the conversion to 589nm is about 3% efficient. That would mean it'll take a pump diode of roughly 2.65W. Now, we know they tend to be overspecd to up to 100mw. So that means there could be a pump diode in it of somewhere around 3W. (would be nice if someone with more knowledge about 589nm's could confirm/correct this)

I wouldn't run it for longer than 2 to 3 minutes, given my theory is correct.

One review has the DL 50mw on for 30mins if I remember correctly with no damage.

Good review and glad that you got a nice unit! 100mW of 589nm must be pretty awesome.

I will also recommend against running the laser that long. I've been working on a CNI 10mW 589nm unit over the past few days and the driver and module get HOT after only 30 seconds. These modules are being pushed quite hard for their size IMO, so take it easy on the duty cycles. The method of generating 589nm light is quite a bit more sensitive than even DPSS 532nm.

Nice review GR3EN!
Glad to see that you also received an over-spec unit. Welcome to the 589 club.
It's amazing that your unit has a substantial power jump at about the same time as Cyparagon's (35-40secs.).

I know that some of these have been run for extended periods, but I feel that my 589
gets uncomfortably warm for my tastes after a couple of minutes of constant on time, but I'm probably just overly cautious about losing an expensive, and beautiful laser. :)

Mine is quite jumpy. The highest I've seen it hit was 82mW. Congrats and isn't it a bit of a relief to have your own LPM?;)

That DL 50mW behaves the same as my PGL III C.

Mice review, thank you for sharing.

Also the heat can knock the crystal loose if ran too long. Happened with my 400mw green. It wasn't a CNI laser but still these yellow ones need to be treated carefully due to the complex components and alignments

Re: DL 50mw 589nm Review (finally) (Power Test Up)

they're built just like the ones in my PGL-A teardown. just with a different/shorter more simplified driver board set. it's the same module. the laser crystal is epoxied in and the ktp is mounted in front of it and screwed down in place then glued to prevent it from walking. its pretty rigid.

Also on the note of the diode pump power. they're generally around 2W. resulting in about 50-80mW depending on temperature and wavelength efficiencies. so 2.5W isn't unreasonable of a guess for 100mW. Quoted reccommended runtime is 1-2min max. mine warms up to 121 on a good battery usually and holds that for over a minute or two before starting to dip down which is when I turn it off. any more than that means the diode is literally burning up. they aren't heat sinked to the casing much, and the module gets hot very fast. within about 20 seconds its hot enough to sizzle sweat off my fingers.

That might explain why the host doesn't heat up much. People have been running them for 5+min based on host temperature. I never had the guts to do that with mine.

yes. the module just floats inside the casing. it doesnt make flush contact. the inside is slightly over large and threaded. it just drops in and then a retaining ring is inserted with a spanner wrench to hold it in, and then the lens screwed inside in front of it then epoxied in place so it doesn't drift. nothing too fancy.

In post #19 I linked a thread with a review showing a Spartan host has heat dissipation and it looks like the host is working as a heatsink.
Please explain how this member ran his for 30 minutes without issue? Brucmir also runs his for 10 minutes or more while photographing all the time. I'm still using short (minute or so) duty cycles.
