I have been using several red lasers (assisted aiming devices) on pistols and rifles for a couple of decades, but am just getting involved with higher powered hand held portable lasers now.

From the 'not real' lasers but similar interest, I've been a Star Wars nut for almost 40 years as well, and have been involved with the RPF prop builders since 1999 making/collecting static Lightsaber props.

So here I am on LPF after lurking and trying to learn a few things before I joined. I have to be honest and admit it's all a bit overwhelming, and I'm past my prime and for getting all involved in ' from the ground up' building, when so many here and elsewhere have so many offerings. Many also seem quite affordable compared to the past decade or so.

Hopefully I'll be able to ask sensible (at least it will be to me..lol) questions, and add some experiences (as I get some) to the forum.

Lastly but not least, I have on order an SF-501B from Sci-Fi Lasers. Quite a step up from my past experience with firearms lasers, but that's why I am here. :yh:

Thanks...

Thank you; Tha Greenlander!

Hey LaserCo, I don't think I've talked (posted, im'd etc..) to anyone about lasers until now, but still glad to meet a fellow Midwesterner, even if you did move over to the neighboring state! What might we have talked about.. My memory stinks these days.

I have a lot of friends/acquaintances from WI. I also am a fan of the Packers, of course second only to the Vikings.

So it's not so bad living there is it? I guess I'm thinking you might be close to the border or?

Still good to have someone nearby.

Yeah it is supposed to snow (apparently) today.

So Wolverine, you must be a bit N. of the cities, or I'm in for a brrr.. cold awakening. It was bad enough raining all day today and barely climbing out of the 30's in the cities..

I was thinking that when the real cold hits, it would keep the lasers cooler, or they might cool down faster? Just a SWAG at this point. :yh:

Thanks for the welcome guys, and to my WI and MN buds stay warm and dry as it's getting wet and cold now.. yeah.. :san: I know..

I have really been reading a lot of threads on so much, I am really overwhelmed on the technical, basically just enough to be dangerous to myself.. :) However, I am only (at this point) planning to buy a few (cough, I know, right) different ones to (safely) play around with a lot like my over powered lights, firearms, etc.. Just a hobby for enjoying what each has to offer. I'm not into building like when I was younger. Also money is in much shorter supply as well. I have always wanted to get into lasers, but the power to cost back then was not as affordable or advanced as today, so here I am better late than never.

So that said, I have on order an interesting (for me) array of items. First is a Sci-Fi Lasers 501B 445NM 1.3W-1.8W. This seems like it will be a 'huge' first start for me. I will be careful, and treat it like a firearm/weapon so-to-speak.

Then, after reading so much here about 'some' over spec'd online auction versions of green 532NM and hopefully a violet 405NM, I really looked at a ton of them trying to pick out (guess) which might be said 'powerful' ones. Anyway I picked one green and one violet from 2 different sources, and they were not very expensive, so if they at least work, I'll be happy.

Now I need to get some safety glasses for them before I use them. I have found many on Ebay, but would like some affordable ones local in MN if possible. Otherwise I'm excited to get the lasers and am happy to have found the forum and joined. :)

No problem, I personally think you shouldn't start HUGE like that. Even with my 80mw 520nm it is still dangerous. Starting with 1w is exetreme. Just one reflection into your safety glasses from ebay could give you eye damage. Get these if you are doing 1w Eagle Pair® 190-540nm Standard Laser Safety Goggles

If you don't want to do 1w than here are some of my suggestions.
15mw green. Over-spec (around 25mw-37mw) and really bright.Green Laser Pointers : Dragon Lasers
Laser Glow 5mw "Anser" bright but not enough for burning tricks.Laserglow Technologies

Take a look around dragon lasers and tell us what you think you're going to do.:thanks:
