Styro's mom -- Isn't Styro coming home this week?
Styro's dad -- Yeah. He'll be here Thursday
Styro's mom -- I guess I better plug that laser thingy back in before he gets here

Peace,
dave

Thanks Styro, for sharing this.....My monitor, thanks Dave for the shower

Get the smallest ups (even one with dead batteries and replace them) to make it bridge power outages. Even a little ups will run a wall wart to power this little red wonder for ages.

Alternatively, hook up a battery in parallel with the wall wart (rechargeable of course). put some intelligent circuitry in between the battery and the wall wart to protect the battery from overcharging. It'll be like a mini ups.

To prevent tampering, point it at a data logging LPM, and hook that to a cheap laptop running ubuntu server and no-ip client and ssh daemon. Log in every week and see if someone has turned off the laser by downloading the LPM logs.

Overkill but it will ensure the test is not tampered with :p

Either way the laser wont go off when the power fails if you use the ups method. :)

27,000 hours thats a darn long time.

Probably the same year I got mine - I remember I was 15 when it arrived - the NEC GLG 3030 - I built a home made power supply for it - using info from sams laser faq :)

I remember it had a heap of big transistors and a big bank of caps that made one helluva bang when you shorted them prior to servicing the supply. Then I learnt about bleeder resistors ;)

Well thats amazing, most of the sellers of these small output modules rate the lifetime to about 5000hrs. This thread serves as a testimony to its longativity, and to a degree yours as well. I see there are many members from 4 years ago that are no longer active here! +Rep

Just an update, this laser is still running strong at 35500 hours! I wonder when it will finally pop on me. :D

sweet mother of [censored] wow that's one tough cookie. though honestly if its running continuously its less harsh than turning it on and off. its the thermal stress that kills it frankly as far as i've seen. with gas its different.

Simply amazing :) We should do more of these test on other diodes. I find this very cool. However i also think it is luck of the draw with each diode being different!

That's impressive, though not surprising. Seems to be a correlation between power and lifespan. That sort of diode was likely designed to be used in barcode scanners and other devices were a long lived laser light bulb is required.

That made me laugh out loud. Thanks for the belly laugh.

Re: 44000 Hours

And for the yearly update...still going five years later! That's 44000 hours!!! I wonder how much longer it will last...it still has the same power supply.

Well... In theory.... It should last nearly forever as long as it is kept at optimal conditions. Those little ones aren't under much stress. Transistors can run over 25 years before failing under a average load. I don't see why a LD can't do that a a low power. My 488 labby is rated for over 20,000 hours.

Either way that's dang impressive though... Go little diode go!

Holy mother of god...

I wonder how much it has cost to keep running electricity wise? I mean I know low powered diodes don't eat up much, but it adds up...
