Build #2 was uneventful. 9mm 445nm diode, driver and module from DTR. Excellent service as always from DTR. For some reason I had to sign for my parts this time. Luckily I was able to chase down the mail delivery person and get my stuff. Might have been because I ordered more "stuff" this time.

Host is from Survival Lasers with the extended tapered copper heat sink also got the battery contact, pill and artic silver from them. Excellent service as always.

Batteries are 16340 GTL 2300mah from Ebay .... I need to check one of those and see if they are really 2300mah. Seem to work good though :) The place I get them from sell RC stuff, so I hope they are what they say.

Heat shrink and flux are from Flaminpyro. Great service from that member also. My next build I get to try out his diode press :) I know his module extractor is great for keeping the heatsink from turning while tightening the bezel. Not really it's intended purpose I guess, but that's what I use it for :)

This was a really clean easy build.









I built this one for an Electrical Engineer I work with, his hobby is working with different types of metals. That's why I went with the stainless and copper look. I think this host would look really good with one of those 1w green diodes DTR has listed :) Gotta save up my pennies.

Nice looking build, and just as impressive is your clean workstation! +1 although I cant write in the rep box as I am on my phone. Gj, keep building!

Thanks ! I have to keep my stuff organized or else it drives me crazy. I can't work in clutter. I'm learnin' :) Be glad when I get my lathe set up and can make some different hosts just the way I want them :)

You should not put the green diode in a stainless steel host. Is a poor material to use for heat dissipation. To top it off that is a small host too. the new green diode gives off a ton of heat if you put it in there you will most likely kill it or give it a horribly small duty cycle. The 1W green diodes are only 11% efficient. here is what is needed taken from the green diode page

At 1 watt output, this LD will dissipate 6 WATTS of heat due to it's lower efficiency.

This is beyond the capability of most handheld devices.

From dissipation work I have done with multi-emitter UV lights,

this will require about 2/3 of a pound of aluminum in a light.

I would be very cautious in regard to overdriving.

The 1W Green Nichia LD dissipates 273% more heat than the new 445nm LD's per watt @ rated power.

Don't lose a premium laser diode.

You need to put it in a large custom Al/Cu host. Also I've heard that the diodes are going into mass production in march so they should comedown in price after that.

It will be a minute before I can get a green diode, I wouldn't be comfortable spending that much on a diode right now with my limited knowledge. Plus I have too many 445's layin' around waiting for me to do sumthin' with 'em .

Sounds like a win/win for me, about the time the price comes down I should be setup to build my first custom host. I'll be keeping an eye out for a chunk of copper :)

Thanks ! Yep but the green ones sure are purty :) I think lasers are kind of like motorcycles, I'd have one of all of them if I could :beer:

The Survival Lasers S.S. host is a favorite of a lot of the builders, simple and classy!
One of the lower power 520's would look real good in this host, without any of the heat dissipation issues.

+1 for a nice build, and a workbench we all wish we had! :beer:

Thanks ! He is a good guy, figured I'd build him one since he always buys lunch :) I like that workbench too. :) It's just a $79 on sale at harbor freight bench that I modified. Works good. When I was putting it together my girlfriend said "Tell me this is not going in the house". I said sure this is not going in the house. Guess where it's at :D I did sit a plant on it and say "see honey I decorated it just for you" :) No wonder I can't stay married. :eek:

Superb build, I have 2 of those hosts myself, one carrying a 2.2W 9mm 445.

Thanks ! I like the stainless host with the copper heat sink vs. the aluminum host. The weight of the stainless seems to help offset the weight of the heat sink, makes the overall weight more but it just feels better and more balanced in my hand.
That's why I posted pics and specs, if someone was thinking about a first build I couldn't imagine one being much more simple than this one. Basically just trim the leads from the diode/driver, solder them to the contact board, solder the board to the ring, press the ring in the pill. Bam ! Instant Laser ! :) I like to see people be successful.
