I ordered a three set of lasers from ebay. Those cheapie 5mW ones.

I ended up complaining about how the red one was weak, it was of a different type, and he said he would send me a new blue one for an extra 2 dollars, so i ended up doing that.

I just got the new blue laser today and it is much much weaker than the original blue laser i got in the pack of three. Is this normal?

Im spotting minor differences in the construction of the laser.
Ill post some dot shots, and you can see the marked difference in brightness.

Here is another picture.

There is a small difference in the radius of the caps.

Is this normal? I did some complaining, even though he did this all to try to satisfy a customer.

The clips are at different heights, so this is just from a different production.

Is there anything i can do about this? I'll probably just end up giving it away or using it for a project or something.

Maybe itll wear in?

There are lots of different pens made in different ways. Some are of course better than others. It's a crap shoot usually unless you run into a seller that has a stock of the good ones. Even then once his supplies are exhausted who knows if his next batch will be good.
Can't expect too much from these.

in the comparison the violet is massively bright! you shouldnt have complained... damned first one looks strong as hell. the second one may be an honest to god 5mw... whats wrong with the red?

Imagine that, CHEAP laser pens off EBAY, made in CHINA, are not up to par. Key words there....

Thanks for all the replies!!

It was just that the first violet and green i got were so super strong.

And then this weak noob-sauce laser arrives and drowns my hopes.

It was just the contrast, thats all.

And the red, nothing wrong, it was probably just a 2 or 3 mw pen pointer, just much weaker than the violet and green i got in the same shipment.

Ah yes, my mistake, when i said blue, the whole time i mean 405nm

yeah but you got a second violent for complaining about a weak red... do you have glasses? these most definitely will blind

Is it just me, or am I the only one that noticed on pen has a sticker with "Class II" and the other has "Class III"

eBay pens as a whole are great value for what you pay .I haven't killed one yet and I have dozens of them all over spec (a few dud low power ones of course) and most way way over spec .Of course it depends which company made the batch you get as to the power at least and to some extent the quality .
I bought a dozen of each colour after the first 3 I got from from an Australian eBay seller proved on LPM to be at least 10 times the usual 5mW standard .With over half being just on 20 times the standard 5mW .A 100 mW 532nm for 8 dollars posted is exceptional value ,luck of the draw on what you get.I do have one tip that as a good general rule is true ,the weight of all of my low power eBay pens not in that great batch of ones I bought ,is far lower in weight than the much high powered large batch I bought.
I compared the weights on an electronic scale and the high powered ones ALL where approximately 40% heavier in all .Even without the electronic scale you can easy pick the weight difference between a low 5 to 10 mW pointer and one 50 mW plus very easy .If it's heavy good chance it will put out a lot more power than the far lighter one .Others may disagree or have their own theory but from my collection that's what I determined.I have 405nm so light it's like is there anything in the front section at all and sure enough 6 mW LPM output the heavy one 85mW no problem ,something to consider .

Indeed they are!

I tried taking it apart to "pot mod" it since it was free, but i couldnt extract the module.
I never tried that to any laser and i know it basically breaks it, but i figured id be able to get it to the same power as the other one.

A sacrifice to the laser gods. We've all done this to a unsuspecting pen or five. ;)

I only start ripping when it has died already. Getting that little driver out has been useful .
